Chapter 12 I Won’t Marry You
The sound of sirens came, and it finally eased my worries.

By the time the officers came running over, that tall figure who hit those men had already stumbled away, leaving only at puddle of blood on the ground. Clearly, that shadowy figure was real and not a hallucination of mine.
“Who hit these men?” The officers asked..
I huddled in the corner, in fear, and said nothing.
“A madman! Aren’t you the cops? Go arrest him!” Despite his severe beating, the man responded smugly.
The police approached me and asked, “Did you see the person hit them? Do you know where he ran to?”
I shook my head numbly.
Even if I had seen where he ran, I wouldn’t have said anything-
All of these suckers deserved to take a good beating.
They want to violate me,” I said it in a hoarse voice.
The police frowned and instructed, “Take all of them away!”
“Motherf*cker! Given her attire, we assumed she was a working girl,” the man who had attempted to violate me continued to slander me.
I quivered all over, and my legs went weak as I stood up, hugging myself tight. I protested. I’m not…
“Take all of them back to the police station!”
I followed the police officer, and along the way, my whole body was still shaking.
Just out of the alley, I spotted Marcus’s car.
He had come back and climbed out of the car. At this point, he was standing in the rain, looking disheveled.
Marcus took a step forward, as if he wanted to talk to me. His Adam’s apple boobled, but no sound came out.
I stood still and stared at him. Then, I let out a sarcastic laugh and told him, “Marcus, I don’t love you anymore.”
Never again.
This love and the favour I owed him had left me completely wounded.
“You have to let me go, and I’ll let myself go too,” I spoke in a choked voice, begging Marcus to spare me.
I knew he didn’t rush back here because he was worried about me. He was simply afraid that if I died, he wouldn’t be able to explain it to his mother.
I was draped in a police officer’s jacket, and my face was pale as I smiled at him, saying, “Marcus, I don’t love you anymore.”
He stood stiffly in place and didn’t follow me.
That man probably despised me for embarrassing him.
There was blood all over the ground, as well as injuries to my feet.
I limped to the police car, which resembled a walking dead without a soul as I sat there.
Back in the police station, I recounted the whole incident but left out the man who had helped me.

That shadowy figure wandered in the light like a devil, appearing and disappearing just as suddenly.
After recording my statement, the police allowed me to leave.

My feet were sore to the point of numbness. I stuggled to walk out of the door of the police station as if I couldn’t feel the pain before I lost it and fell to the ground.
The rain was still falling. I curled up my body as I started to feel a little cold.
“You… Suddenly, an umbrella showed up on top of my head.
I looked up and saw that it was a police officer.
“You have injured your foot. I happen to be going to the hospital; let me take you
there.”
He spotted that I was wary about him. That officer spoke again, Zeke Palmer, I’m a detective. Don’t be afraid of me.”
I nodded in acknowledgement, got up carefully, and looked at his car.
Tm filthy: My body was covered in blood.
Zeke pulled out some tissues and handed them to me. He comforted, “It’s okay; I’ll wash the car tomorrow.”
“Thank you.” I was a little awkward, but I still got in the car.
I didn’t know where I could go.
“What is a young girl like you doing in the middle of the night in a bar? From now on, you need to take this as a lesson! You’re lucky that nothing happened to you.” On the way to the hospital, Zeke angrily lectured me, “Our city is not peaceful lately; murders often take place in that area.”
“Thanks,” I said timidly as I expressed my gratitude.
“Where are your family?” Zeke asked.
I shook my head and revealed, “I don’t have any family. My parents have both passed away.
I don’t have a family anymore.
Zeke froze. He gripped the steering wheel tightly and cautioned. That doesn’t mean you can go astray. There are many ways to make money, and you don’t have to resort to illegal ways.
I knew that he had misunderstood that I was a lost girl.
Still, I didn’t explain.
There didn’t seem to be any difference between me and a lost girl.
When my parents passed away, they didn’t leave me much property, and their company still owed a debt that the Flynns helped me pay off.
Marcus also saved my life.

“You would have died if my family hadn’t taken you in. Even if you died, you would still be mine. Do you hear me?” Marcus had warned me more than once. When he violated me, it was me atoning for my sins–and repaying the favour of his family. It had nothing to do with love.
