Chapter 2 Questions After Injury
I glanced at this self–righteous man and let out a small laugh.
Back then, when Jayden learned I couldn’t get pregnant easily, he brought Nicole home without even discussing it with me.
He claimed he didn’t want me to suffer just to have a baby and that it didn’t matter if the child wasn’t biologically his as long as I could be a mother.
I believed him.
To reassure him, I let my child take his last name, even though my parents didn’t agree.
On Nicole’s third birthday, I gave her 15% of the company shares as a gift because he begged me to.
But instead of gaining anything, my efforts dragged me into misery.
Furious, I slapped him hard.
“If you think I don’t care about Nicole, then from now on, neither of you will get a cent from the Schultz family. You’re both suspended. Go get new jobs.”
Jayden held his face and looked at me in disbelief.
Then, he spoke with a hint of contempt, “Wynter, have you lost your mind? I’m the one who signed every business deal. Without me, the Schultz Group would fall apart.
“You’d better behave, or else…”

Right then, the operating room door opened, cutting off his threatening words.
He glared at me fiercely before rushing inside to ask about the situation.
I didn’t want to see Nicole, so I turned to leave.
Jayden grabbed my arm. “Where are you going? Nicole broke her leg. She needs you.”
I shook his hand off and said coldly, “Didn’t you say I’m not her real mom? That I’d only hurt her? Have you forgotten already?”
“I didn’t mean it. You’re overreacting.”
“Am I? Even a dog wags its tail when fed. You two are worse than dogs.”
Jayden’s expression darkened. He was about to curse when an aggrieved voice interrupted.
“Jayden, how’s Nicole? Is it bad? I…”
A woman in a tight designer dress ran straight into his arms.
It was Elisa Bailey–his lover in my previous life and my nominal
caregiver.
Back then, he brought her back under some excuse after I got out of the hospital. But now, she’d shown up even sooner.
Just as I was wondering, Elisa gave Jayden a sorrowful look.
“Uh…”
He looked flustered, twisted her arm a little, and pushed her away.
She quickly regained balance and noticed me staring at them with a

sarcastic smile.
Jayden’s eyes darted nervously.
Elisa lowered her gaze and stayed quiet.
Looking at their awkward behavior, I sneered. “Jayden, did you forget you already have a wife?”
Jayden flinched, looked at Elisa, and stammered, “D–don’t get the wrong idea. I just hired her today. She’s just a caregiver.”
He even repeated it to make it sound more believable.
Elisa nodded quickly in agreement.
I knew they were lying, but I didn’t call them out.
Jayden thought he got away with it and didn’t even notice when I walked off.
After leaving the hospital, I went straight to the office.
While he was gone, I called an urgent meeting with the shareholders.
The content was to fire him and buy back Nicole’s stocks at a premium price.
Over the next few days, the shareholders cooperated with me, quietly moving Jayden’s confidants into empty titles.
I gave Jayden ten days of leave, saying he needed to take care of Nicole.
He didn’t contact me once. I paid off his confidants, and they slipped away without his knowledge.
The ungrateful Nicole, on the other hand, kept calling like crazy.

She rang my phone ten times a day, but I never answered.
When that didn’t work, she started texting.

“Mom, I’m hurt, but you don’t even visit. Do you still care? How could you be this heartless?
“Wynter, you better show up today. If you don’t, I’m done calling you Mom.
“If you won’t come, Elisa will take your place. You decide.”

After reading her texts, I didn’t think Nicole felt insecure without me.
She’s just pretending to be obedient, trying to get me to unblock her card.
The moment I returned to the office, I froze both her and Jayden’s
accounts.
Nicole was always a big spender. Her allowance would be gone halfway through the month, and she’d rely on credit to get by.
She clearly panicked when I suddenly blocked her card. She tried to guilt- trip me into giving in.
Jayden was aware of her plan, but he didn’t want to lose dignity in front of Elisa.
In the video the driver had sent me, he had reassured her confidently.
“Don’t worry. Since her parents died, Wynter has trusted me the most. If I ignore her for a week, she’ll come crawling back.”
When I heard his smug words, I realized how little I mattered in this marriage.

Fueled by that thought, I called the hospital and canceled all payments for Nicole’s treatment.
The idea of all three of them getting kicked out brought a bit of satisfaction.
I used a bath bomb I’d brought from France, hoping it would help me sleep better.
Right after I lay down, Jayden called me. I just looked at it and declined the call.
He kept calling for the next 30 minutes. Honestly, the ringtone felt oddly satisfying.
The more they panicked, the more pathetic they seemed.
Lying on the bed, I finally answered the call.
Jayden’s angry voice came through. “Wynter Schultz, have you lost your mind? Nicole needs medical care. How could you stop the payments?
Send the money now or we’re done!”
“Fine,” I said calmly. “Let’s get divorced.”
