After hitting him, I moved back behind Hugo.

I stared coldly at Alisa and Evan. “This is my home, and bitches and dogs aren’t welcome here. Please leave.”
Alisa staggered back a few steps. Evan’s expression changed, looking at me in disbelief.
He raised his hand to touch his swollen eye. “Daisy, say that again? What do you mean by that?”
I sneered. “Exactly what it sounds like. My home is a place for human beings, not for bitches and dogs.
“Do I need to spell it out more clearly? In my eyes, Alisa is nothing but a bitch, and you’re the dog licking her ass!”
Evan flew into a rage and roared as he lunged toward me, but Hugo kicked him hard, sending him flying.
His body was sent sprawling awkwardly until he slid all the way to the opposite wall before stopping.
Evan clutched his stomach, glaring viciously at Hugo and me.

“Daisy, you were hooking up with another man before we even broke up!”
I thought I’d be furious hearing Evan’s humiliating words.
But surprisingly, I felt nothing at all. I just watched him quietly, like I was looking at a clown.
Having endured a lifetime of abuse and attacks, Evan’s words meant nothing to me now.
I should actually thank him and Alisa for toughening up my mental resilience.
I grabbed the mop and swung it at both of them, driving them out
the door.
Evan stumbled backward several steps, pulling the frightened Alisa as they hurried away.
After closing the door, my tense body suddenly relaxed. I leaned against the wall and slowly slid down, crouching on the floor.
Hugo handed me a tissue. I looked up at him in a daze.
“Wipe off the sweat. Your forehead is covered in it.”
Only then did I realize.

that I even wanted to kill myself. Now, forcing myself through the fear, being able to defeat them was already no small feat.
After letting my guard down, I belatedly discovered that sweat had already soaked my entire body.
I took the tissue and wiped away the sweat, then smiled gratefully at Hugo.
“Dr. Olson, I really owe you one this time.
“If you hadn’t been willing to testify for me, I probably would’ve become the bitch everyone despises.”
Hugo shook his head.
“It’s nothing. You saved my mother, so you’re our family’s benefactor.
“Besides, you weren’t pregnant to begin with. I was just stating the facts it hardly counts as helping.”
But I remained deeply grateful, thanking him repeatedly and insisting on treating him to dinner.
Hugo said, “You’re being too polite. Since we’re friends, there’s no need to be so formal.”
But I insisted.
He didn’t know that he had truly saved a living soul.
