Chapter 16
In the midst of the silent atmosphere, Nathaniel suddenly gripped Scarlett’s wrist tightly.]
“Will you stay by my side forever?”
Scarlett lowered her head in silence, clearly seeing the blood seeping through the bandage on Nathaniel’s wrist. The vivid red pierced her eyes, yet Nathaniel seemed oblivious, his gaze fixed intently on her as if her answer mattered more than his life.
Scarlett’s heart swelled with emotion. She avoided Nathaniel’s eyes, forcing a slight smile.[]
“Yes, I’ll stay with you forever.“[]
The clock ticked loudly in the cold hospital room. Nathaniel’s tense expression relaxed slightly.[]
As his anxiety eased, fatigue gradually overtook him. He leaned back against the headboard, his expression weary, “Scarlett, you’ve never lied to me. This time, don’t lie to me either.“]
Something collapsed inside Scarlett’s heart. Her nose stung as she nodded. “I won’t lie to you.“[]
She looked at Nathaniel; reaching out involuntarily to stroke his hair. “Sleep now.“[]
“When I wake up, will you still be here?“]
Scarlett paused, about to answer when she realized Nathaniel had already closed his eyes in exhaustion. The breeze ruffled his hair, his face serene and handsome.
It seemed like ages since she’d last seen Nathaniel sleeping.[]
The bright sunlight streaming through the window seemed to block Scarlett’s throat. Looking at Nathaniel so close, time seemed to flow backward to when she first met him. It was as if nothing had ever changed.]
He was still Nathaniel, and she was still herself.]
Scarlett sighed softly, her heart so tender that the slightest touch might bring tears.[]
The clock on the table slowly reached 10 o’clock.[]
Her body felt increasingly light, her vision increasingly blurry. Scarlett knew she was about to vanish.[]
She bit her lip, trying to speak but managing only a hoarse whisper: “Goodbye, Nathaniel.“[]
Perhaps they would never meet again.]]
Before her consciousness faded to darkness, she choked out: “Please live well.“]
With a gust of wind through the window, Nathaniel suddenly awoke.[]
Sunlight poured through the window, brilliantly illuminating the floor, but Scarlett was nowhere to be seen.
The room was empty, with only Nathaniel left alone.
Silence–a deathly silence.
The hospital was so quiet that only breathing could be heard.]
The sky was azure, the clouds pure white, the sunlight weaving like golden threads through all creation]
Yet in the crematorium, everything remained as cold as ever.[]
Dong-
As the twelve o’clock bell rang, Scarlett abruptly opened her eyes. The mortician preparing her body screamed in terror and ran.
