Chapter 20
“You…” Scarlett’s heart suddenly constricted. She stared at the scars, stunned. “What happened?”
Nathaniel regained his composure and silently put his watch back on. “Nothing.“[]
What did he mean, nothing? She had clearly seen the evidence.[]
Scarlett wanted to ask more, but the car stopped, and Riley’s voice came from the front.]
“Nate, we’re here.”
Nathaniel acknowledged with a quiet “Hmm” and stepped out of the car first.]
Scarlett closed her eyes briefly, suppressing the emotions swirling inside her, and got out. Only then did she see the company building–not huge, but certainly substantial.
She stared at Nathaniel’s retreating figure, increasingly confused.[]
He had always said he hated business management, so why was he running a company? Why a company focused on jewelry exhibitions? And what about those scars on his wrist?
Were they because of her?]
Before she could piece it together, Riley appeared beside her.[]
“I’d prefer if you didn’t pry into Mr. Blackwell’s affairs.“]
Scarlett startled, turning to see Riley’s cold expression–completely different from the vulnerable woman she’d known three years ago. In those years, Riley had dearly grown.]
Only Scarlett remained stuck in place, completely clueless about what had transpired.]
Scarlett nodded. “Of course, I understand.“[]
As Nathaniel’s fiancée, Riley’s desire to keep her away was perfectly reasonable.[]
Riley hesitated, her gaze intense. “I hope you truly do.“]
For the next period, Scarlett would stay at Nathaniel’s company to monitor the exhibition’s progress.[]
For convenience, her workstation was placed right outside Nathaniel’s office.[]
She had barely settled in when Nathaniel called her inside.[]
He placed several designs before her. “These designs were interrupted. If you have any inspiration, please complete them.“]
Scarlett opened the sketches and realized they were all her own designs from before–designs she’d never finished due to her illness. Looking at some exhibition Stems from the contract, they too seemed strangely familiar.]
They were all designs she had once sketched]
Scarlett’s breath caught she looked up at Nathaniel, an incredible thought forming in her mind.[]
Had Nathaniel started this company to help her realize her unfulfilled dreams?]
Scarlett gripped the designs tightly and abruptly closed the folder. “I’m sorry, but this isn’t part of my responsibilities.
Nathaniel had already sarrificed so much to repay Riley’s family. She didn’t want her dying wish to trap him for the rest of his life. That would be too cruel
Nathaniel watched her quietly for a moment, then lowered his gaze. ‘Is that so7)
“Yes” Scarlett said. “I’m only here to monitor the exhibition.
Nathaniel banked at her. “And when the exhibition ends, you’ll leave?“]
Svarten nightened her grip, trying to keep her voice neutral. “Yes.“[]
There’s no possitality of you staying?”
Scarlett maintained her stance. “None“]
Perhaps it was her imagination, but after she answered, Nathaniel’s lips seemed to pale:[]
He lowered his head I see. You may go’l
Searjen hesitated, then walked out just as she closed the door, she thought she heard Nathaniel coughing[]
Her hand paused on the handle, but she still shut the door:[]
Scarlett stood at the company entrance, sighing deeply.
She really didn’t want to face Nathaniel Light now.
as she entered the building the next day, she discovered Nathaniel hadn’t come in. Scarlett had just begun to feel relieved when Riley approached her with a furious expression
“What did you say to Nathaniel yesterday? Can’t you just leave him alone?“]
