Chapter 30
“A dream world?” Scarlett hesitated, then memories suddenly exploded like white light before her eyes.[]
Three years ago, at the hospital bedside, when the clock struck ten, she had indeed vanished from Nathaniel’s sight. But her soul hadn’t dissipated–just become invisible to everyone.[]
She had followed Nathaniel, watching him wake and search for her with manic desperation. The wounds on his wrists reopened, blood soaking through bandages onto the floor. Riley held him, sobbing and begging him to come to his senses.[]
Doctors injected sedatives and brought in therapists, but nothing worked. Whenever he was conscious, he sought ways to die, muttering. “I’m dying, why can’t I see you yet?“]
He was always pale and weak from sleep. Riley cried herself dry at his bedside, eventually having no choice but to confine him to a secure room.[]
The room contained no sharp objects; all corners were padded, all walls cushioned.[]
Nathaniel grew strangely calm. When everyone thought the situation was improving, he asked to go home.[]
He had never had a home–his home was the Chase residence.[]
Riley took him back to the house, He behaved normally, but at midnight, he locked the bedroom door.
In the bathroom, he filled the tub with warm water. A sharp razor sliced open his wrist, blood slowly dissolving into the water.
Scarlett screamed in the air above, but he couldn’t hear her. He also couldn’t hear Riley pounding on the door or the police being called.]
He stared ahead calmly, “If I truly die, will you appear?“]
At that moment, perhaps it was true desperation, but her heart–wrenching screams somehow reached Nathaniel.[]
His eyes regained focus, and he looked directly at her, moisture gathering in his gaze. “Scarlett.“[]
He spoke her name, and it pierced her heart like a sword.[]
Her eyes instantly filled with tears. She said, “Nathaniel, I’m not dead yet. The Grim Reaper said I wasn’t meant to die, that I could come back, but my body was cremated, so I need a new one. I just haven’t found the right one yet.“[]
She spoke the lie naturally, “Sq, Nathaniel, wait for me, okay? Wait for me to return. You can’t die. Promise you’ll wait for me?“[]
She had no other way to keep Nathaniel alive except these false promises.[]
Thankfully, Nathaniel believed her. He slowly covered his wrist. “I’ll wait for you. I’ll wait…“[]
Outside, Riley and the police broke down the bedroom door and rushed him to an ambulance.[]
Riley stared at the blood filled bathtub, weeping uncontrollably. Then she stood, wiping her tears, and searched through the drawers until she found writing paper. Carefully mimicking Scarlett’s handwriting, she wrote a letter that began:[]
“Nathaniel, you must live well…“]
Scarlett watched in stunned silence, her eyes wet though spirits couldn’t cry. As her spirit form gradually dissipated, her final words were: “Could I see Nathaniel
one more time?
Scarlett snapped back to reality, the harsh sunlight beating down on the pavement before her.[]
Looking up, she could see the pristine white exhibition hall.]
She glanced at her hands–Willow’s hands. Those had been her past memories. So her most powerful wish had been this.[]
Scarlett laughed bitterly. Behind her, Damian asked in a deep voice, “What did you remember?“]
“My wish was to see Nathaniel one more time,” Scarlett said quietly.[]
