Chapter 80
Still, at that moment, Kai found his gaze irresistibly drawn to me. At first, it was indeed because my face bore an uncanny resemblance to his ex–wife, making it impossible for him to look away.
He even chastised himself, feeling that he shouldn’t be doing this. I was me and his ex–wife was his ex–wife. There was an insurmountable distance between them.
Yet, he soon realized how different I was from her. Although our faces were nearly identical, my personality, thoughts and everything about me captivated him deeply.
He understood then that his heart was already stirring and he could no longer ignore those feelings.
So, he began to pursue me and he won me over. Eventually, I also fell in love with him and married him.
As time went on, Kai truly realized that he hadn’t fallen in love with an image of his ex–wife at all, but with me, the person.
Even with all the gossip surrounding him and despite his marriage always being a topic of controversy in others‘ eyes, he never cared. Because he knew he loved me, he loved me for who I was, not for my face.
But over these past seven years, Kai gradually noticed that I had changed.}
In the beginning, I would prepare a hot cup of milk for him when he came home late at night, send him short messages during his busy workdays, or personally call a doctor for him and care for him when he was sick.
His job was incredibly demanding, but I never made him feel neglected, even if he was out working all day.
Over the years, I had let down my guard and accepted him.”
However, as our child grew older, Kai noticed that I was paying less and less attention to him.
Scott started school and I spent more time focusing on his growth and education, unintentionally neglecting Kai.}
Every time he came home, he was still the same busy man, but now without my care.
I could sense the change in his mood, but I didn’t look too deeply into it, assuming he was just tired from work or in a bad mood.} What he needed wasn’t just a wife who mothered his son, but a true partner, a woman who could share life’s burdens with him.”
Then, Florence Yale appeared before him.”
At first, Kai didn’t feel anything special for her.
She merely bore a striking resemblance to his ex–wife and he even suspected that whoever sent her his way had ulterior motives; just the thought disgusted him.”
Yet, time and again, Florence forced her way into his sight. Once, drenched from head to toe, she rushed a severely ill kitten to the hospital.
When he saw that scene, he suddenly thought of me. I had also saved a stray cat like that once.
In that moment, something deep inside Kai stirred.
Unable to ignore his own compassion, he helped Florence, just once.
Soon, it turned into twice, then three times.
Each time he saw her helpless eyes, he would instinctively reach out to help.
Perhaps he didn’t realize that he had been drawn in by her dependent gaze.
Gradually, Florence became a part of his life.
In this relationship, he seemed to be sinking deeper, unable to pull himself out.
Her dependence and vulnerability became an outlet for the passion and longing he had slowly lost.
After all, the kind of feminine gentleness and yearning he had once craved was provided by Florence.
He expected me to explode when I found out. However, when I discovered the truth and heard the whispers around me, I didn’t immediately lose control.
Instead, I stayed calm and made my decision.
