Chapter 17M
Kai sat on the sofa in his office, brows tightly furrowed, eyes burning with rage
His phone screen incessantly flashed with messages from all sides, almost every single one of which was related to me
Private detectives, friends he’d contacted through his network and even people who had directly reached out to him were all trying to discover my whereabouts. Still, Sebastian had suppressed entirely any trace of me.
He couldn’t accept this calm and precise “blockade.” Like a beast unable to catch its prey, it was almost driving him mad.
“Carolyn, where on earth did you go?” He gripped the desk forcefully, his nails digging into the wooden surface, yet he still couldn’t calm himself down.
“Mr. Lockwood, all records from transportation hubs and hospitals have been checked,” his assistant said, standing at the door with a cautious voice. “Mrs. Lockwood and the young master seem to have vanished into thin aic”
Kai suddenly looked up. “Have you checked the home surveillance?”
The assistant was startled. “Do you mean… the home security system?”
“Pull it up,” Kai said as he stood. “Start from one week before they left.”
Half an hour later, a technician brought up the surveillance system on the study computer
Kai sat in front of the screen, his eyes unblinking, fixed on the footage.
The first few days were normal: I picked up Scott from school, cooked in the kitchen and helped the child with homework. Until that day…
“Stop,” Kai suddenly cut in “Is this the day Florence fell down the stairs?“8
In the footage, Florence was standing at the top of the stairs, talking to Scott.M
Kai narrowed his eyes, noticing several details he had previously missed. Scott was at least two meters away from the stairs. Meanwhile, Florence kept adjusting her stance as she spoke, seemingly looking for an angle.
Suddenly, he remembered what I screamed at him before he locked me in the basement that day. “Check the surveillancel Florence fell
herself!”
He had ignored me, even accusing me of framing her. M
Seeing Florence like this now, he suddenly broke out in a cold sweat. He gritted his teeth and spoke.
“Continue playing.“N
The next scene made Kai’s breath catch. Florence suddenly fell backwards, but Scott clearly remained in place, not moving!
Even more obviously, before she fell, her right hand made a distinct pushing motion on the railing.
“Play it again,” Kai’s voice tightened.N
They rewatched the footage five times and each replay clearly showed Florence losing her balance on her own.
Kai’s stomach twisted into knots as he remembered my desperate pleas that day and Scott’s dazed eyes after being struck.
“Check what else she did around that time.“N
The technician pulled up surveillance from other angles.N
There, they saw Florence hiding in the garden an hour after the incident, making a phone call. Her lips moved distinctly, “That brat’s gonna get what’s coming to them…”
Kai abruptly pushed his chair back and stood up, his temples throbbing.N
He remembered Florence’s flickering eyes every time she cried and how she always managed to stir up conflict between him and me at just the right moment.
“Contact the plastic surgery hospital,” Kai suddenly said. “Check Florence’s recent medical records.“N
The assistant hesitated. “That requires her personal authorization.“W
“Use my name,” Kai’s voice was as cold as ice. “Go now.“>
While waiting for a reply, Kai paced alone in the study.
The sound of rain beating against the window was eerily similar to Scott’s cries that day as he was pressed against the pool of sulfuric acid
What had he done to his child and his loved one because of Florence’s lies?
