Dominic’s mother shot me a sideways glare and said with contempt, “You really think too highly of yourself! If it weren’t for your luck marrying into the Carter family, do you really think you could’ve lived like a rich lady all these years? Since you’ve already enjoyed the Carter family’s wealth, you should behave and be a good housewife. Stop being ungrateful and making a fool of yourself”
The guests around us began to chime in.
“Exactly! She’s just a housewife–shouldn’t she be grateful? Mr. Carter is the richest man in the city! How many women would kill to be Mrs. Carter?”
“If I were her, I wouldn’t even mind my husband bringing other women home. I’d serve them all!!
“If you marry into a wealthy family, you should act like you belong there. She clearly doesn’t know her place.”
“The less capable the woman, the bigger the attitude. Look at her–poor, powerless, and always causing trouble.”
Amidst their mocking, Dominic stared at me with undisguised disgust. “I know you’re acting out because you’re jealous of Beatrice. But she’s my secretary, comes from a prestigious family, and she’s highly competent. Without her help over the years, the Carter Group would’t have grown so fast. And you? You just take care of the kid. Now you can’t even do that right. What makes you think you can compare to her?”
The Carter Group’s success was all thanks to Beatrice?
I laughed.
“I hadn’t secretly brought in resources and shielded the company from its competitors, the Carter Group would’ve been eaten alive long ago.
Beatrice blushed and gave Dominica shy smile. Then she looked at him sweetly and said, “Dom, you used to say Simone had a great way of raising ldds. But now it seems that the only reason for Alexander’s intelligence and well–behave is because your excellent genes. Dominic frowned, a flash of irritation crossing his face
He looked at me and said coldly, “Simone, I was originally going to let you raise the child Beatrice is carrying too, since you did well with Alexander.”
“But now? Look at how you’ve spoiled him. He stayed out all night yesterday and ignored your calls today. If you want to throw tantrums, fine, but don’t ruin the Carter family’s her. I invited all these business elites today just to build connections for Him and pave his future. My son must grow up to be respected and successful, just like me!!!
Seeing Dominic acting all righteous and fatherly, my heart ached
I said in a low voice, “Stop pretending to be a good father. If you truly cared about him, you wouldn’t have abandoned him in the pouring rain just because of a call from Beatrice.”

Dominic snapped, “So I didn’t drive him all the way to the test center–how long are you going to throw a fit over that? You’re petty and dramatic. You’re not a qualified mother, and you don’t deserve to be Mrs. Carter! You want a divorce? Fine. Just bring Alexander here, and I’ll sign the papers immediately!”
He shouted loud enough for the entire hell to hear, like he was done tolerating me.
Alice, Dominic’s mother, quickly spoke up, “Dominic, you should’ve done this a long time ago Simone’s a low–born woman who doesn’t belong in the Carter family. Our worlds are too different. If our precious grandson keeps staying with her, he’ll be ruined. He won’t even learn proper manners for someone of our standing.”
Other members of the Carter family joined in, yelling at me:
“Bring Alexander out right now! Stop ruining the boy’s future with your bad luck!”
Surrounded by the Carters accusations, Beatrice smirked smugly, looking at me ke she’d already won
The wealthy guests and socialites all praised Domink, saying I didn’t deserve him, that I wasn’t good enough for the Carter family, that I was embarrassing them all.
Looking at their righteous, ugly faces, I suddenly smiled.
Dominic cheating, keeping a mistress, and fathering a child out of wedlock was somehow acceptable
But 1, who had done nothing wrong, became the target of their scorn.
What a joke.

I took a deep breath, looked Dominic in the eye, and said slowly, “I’ve already brought our son.
Dormanic glanced around and frowned. “Where is he?”
The rest of the Carter family looked around too, trying to find Alexander.
Alice even put on her reading glasses and scanned the room. “Where’s my darling grandson?
I pulled a small un from my bag and slammed it onto the main table.
*Right here.”
Chapter 5
The load thad of the urn hitting the table startled everyone.
They stared at me with wide eyes, as if I were some kind of monster.
For two full seconds, the room was dead silent.
Beatrice was the first to react. She pretended to be shocked and looked at me with exaggerated fear. “Simone, Dom told you to bring Alexander, and you bring an urn? What’s that supposed to mean? Even if you’re mad, you shouldn’t curse your own son and ruin the Carter Group’s celebration!”
At her words, the crowd tumed on me with disgust.
“How could a mother be like this? Cursing her own son? How disgusting!”
*People like her have nothing going for them, so they cling to pride. Pathetic.”
“Poor Alexander. Saddled with a crazy, deranged mother.”
“Letting someone like her marry into a powerful family is a disgrace”
They backed away as if I were some kind of filth
Alice clutched her chest and gasped for breath, then painted at me, furious: “Simone, you’ve gone too far! Tell me now–where is my grandson?!”

“Simone, have you lost your mind?!”
Dominike glared at me, livid: “I’ve been too lenient with you all these years, and now you think you can say whatever insane lie pops into your head!”
I met his gaze and said firmly, “If you think I’m lying, investigate it yourself.”
Dominic immediately called the butler and ordered, his voice tight, “No matter what it takes, find my son and bring him back!”
After hanging up, he barked at me, “Don’t think I’ll believe any of this nonsense. Once I find him, you’ll pay for all of this and you’ll never see him again.”
His eyes were full of rage, his voice laced with threats
But I wasn’t afraid
“Dominic, the one who needs to pay–is you.”
The business elites around us started to laugh mockingly.
“She’s lost her mind. A powerless housewife, threatening Mr. Carter?”
“Ridiculous. Without Mr. Carter, she wouldn’t even be allowed in this room. Instead of being grateful, she’s making a scene?”
“Bringing out an um to curse her own child, now making empty threats–the classic tantrums of the powerless poor.”
They all looked at me like I was some circus act, a clown trying to be noticed.
Dominic’s face twisted with disgust. “Marrying you was the greatest shame of my life.”
Just then, his phone rang
Seeing it was the butler, Dominic answered and turned on speakerphone so everyone could hear.
In the silent hall, the butler’s trembling voice came through:
“Mr. Carter, I’ve just finished a thorough investigation. It turns out your son passed away the day you sent him to take the SAT.”
