Chapter 9
Grayson’s footsteps froze mid–hallway.
Bur Claire promptly collapsed into his arms. “Grayson my head hurts.”
Grayson blinked, shook off whatever he’d been about to do, and caught her gently. “I’ll take you to the doctors right now.
He turned and strode away, not once glancing back.
Savannah watched his retreating figure.and laughed
Tears mixed with congealed blood streamed down her face.
If he’d turned once–just once he would’ve seen who was bleeding, half–dead, right where they’d left her.
But he didn’t look
His eyes were filled entirely with Claire.
Later, Savannah came to–Bat on the marble floor of the Crestmore estate.
Her body was soaked, her bones felt like they were crushed. Each movement sent a new wave of pain through her back. Her finger was swollen and
bruised
Her phone vibrated in her pocket
She fumbled it out and saw two messages.
The first was from Grayson: “Baby, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have snapped at you. I just didn’t want you making a mistake. I’m staying in the hospital with Claire for a few days–won’t be back until she’s fully recovered.”
Savannah stared at the message, then laughed until tears came again.
How ridiculous,
He beat her nearly to death and acted as if nothing happened still calling her “Baby.”
He hadn’t even noticed she was gone,
The second message was from the registrar: “Ms. Reed, your identity termination and name change have been processed and are now effective.”
Savannah gripped the phone so hard that her knuckles turned white
She could finally leave!
She hauled herself upright, changed into fresh clothes, and dragged the suitcase ‘she’d already packed.
She emptied the house of everything that belonged to her.
Except two things
The first was the necklace Grayson gave her when he was eighteen. Hidden inside was a tiny GPS tracker–he’d said, “Say, I need to know you’re safe at all times.” She thought it sweet… now, it felt sickening
He probably hasn’t checked it in a long time
But if he did, he’d see…
He drowned her in that pool
He beat her nearly a hundred times.
He crushed her finger.
The second thing she left was his love letters–handwritten, yellowed with age
“Sav, when you wore that white dress today, my heart nearly stopped.”
“Sav, let’s get married right after graduation–I can’t wait a single day.”
I love you forever. Only you.”
H
Savannah fingered the faded ink, recalling the night he’d cornered her against the wall, eyes red: “Say, I can’t live without you.”

Amor, traición y muerte
Those words once kept her awake at night
Now, they felt foolish.
She laid the necklace and the letters on the coffee table, then turned away.
Outside the door, she threw her phone into the trash–burying everything he’d taken from her.
From now on, there would be no more tears.
No more Savannah who cried for Grayson Whitmore.
