Chapter 3
After leaving the fake death agency, Maya went to the funeral home to schedule her daughter’s cremation.
Once everything was arranged, Maya called Connor. At the very least, he should see their daughter off one last time.[]
At least, in their daughter’s heart, he had once been a decent father.
“Hello?”
It was Serena’s voice.
Maya froze. Connor never let anyone else touch his phone.]]
“It’s Maya, right? What do you need Connor for? Our Emma just woke up and she’s in some pain from her incision. He’s comforting her right now and can’t take calls. Just tell me whatever it is.”
Serena deliberately held the phone away from her ear.
Through the phone, Maya could hear his gentle, soothing voice.[]
“Emma, don’t cry. You’re such a good girl. Daddy’s here with you. Daddy loves our Emma the most.”
Each word stabbed straight into Maya’s heart. She clutched her chest, enduring the bone–deep pain. “Tell him his daughter’s cremation is tomorrow.”
After saying that, Maya hung up. She leaned against the wall and collapsed to the ground, her body going limp from the pain. She curled up, hugging herself tightly, and broke down sobbing.
The next day, Maya waited all morning. Connor never showed up.[]
She saw her daughter off on her final journey all alone.
After everything was over, Maya walked out of the funeral home holding her daughter’s urn. Suddenly, a car stopped in front of her.[]
Connor got out and rushed toward Maya. He looked at her with burning anger, accusingly.[]
“Maya, how can you be so heartless?
Why wouldn’t you let me see my daughter one last time!
You’re doing this to get back at me, aren’t you!“[]
Maya’s swollen, tear–stained eyes struggled to open. She looked at the man in front of her with a blank expression and spoke in a hoarse voice. “I called you yesterday. I told Serena. She’s the one who didn’t tell you.“]
Connor froze, Just when Maya thought he’d understand the truth and get angry, he let out a mocking laugh instead.[]
“Maya, so now you’re lying too.“]
“What?” Maya totally confused.[]
Connor’s voice was cold and hard, “Don’t try to pin this on Serena. She’s not that kind of person.“[]
Maya’s knuckles turned white as she gripped the urn. Connor would rather believe she was lying than believe that Serena hadn’t told him.
Years ago, the Mitchell and Green families had a business partnership.[]
Project information got leaked. The Greens accused Maya of doing it and wanted to take her away.]
Connor stood in front of everyone protecting her, saying just one thing: “She’s not that kind of person.“[]

Now, Connor said the same words, but the person he was defending was no longer her.
All those loving memories were like reflections in the water–beautiful illusions.]]
Maya had no strength left to argue. These past two months had worn away all her love.
“Yes, this is my punishment for you. You don’t deserve to see her anymore.” Maya accepted the blame.]
Connor’s brows furrowed deeply, his eyes downcast, his face filled with pain. After staring at Maya for several seconds, the anger in his eyes gradually faded. “Fine. If this is your punishment for me, I’ll take it.]
Maya, I admit I was wrong to hide Emma’s existence from you.]
But you’re a mother too. You should know how hard it is for a mother to give up her own child.[]
Ilet Serena keep that baby just out of guilt.]]
You’re the only one 1 love.”
