He didn’t want to acknowledge Emma anymore.]]
This time, he truly didn’t want anyone except Maya.[]
Unfortunately, reality didn’t give him another chance.[]
The surgery failed.[]
The doctor pushed open the operating room door and regretfully told Connor that Maya was dead.
A simple sentence, but it took Connor several hours to process.
He didn’t believe what the doctor said.
He rushed into the operating room and held the lifeless body, crying hysterically.[]
Connor’s trembling hands cupped the face that had been deformed from the high fall, tears streaming down like a broken string, regret wrapping around him like dense threads, binding him tighter and tighter until he couldn’t breathe.[]
Connor refused to accept Maya’s departure and wouldn’t allow her to be cremated.[]
He stayed by Maya’s side all day, not letting anyone come near, keeping her company every minute and second, talking to her as if she were still alive.]
Everyone in the hospital thought Connor was losing his mind.[]
After Connor had watched over Maya without sleep or rest for three days, he finally collapsed from exhaustion.[]
When Connor woke up again, he was already in a hospital room.[]
The moment he thought of Maya, he frantically got up. He didn’t know how long he’d been unconscious, but he was afraid of leaving Maya alone–she would be lonely.
Just as Connor was about to pull the door open, he heard a conversation between Serena and his mother outside the room.[]
“Serena, don’t worry. With me here, you’ll be our daughter–in–law sooner or later.
Maya just died, so it’s natural for Connor to be heartbroken for a few days.
Once enough time passes, he’ll naturally forget. You and Connor have Emma together after all.”
Serena nodded. “Yeah, I know. I’ve waited all these years–I don’t mind waiting a few more days. Back then, I did what you told me and slipped some stuff in his drink. []
So I got pregnant with Emma and made sure we’d always be connected. [
Now I’ll just wait patiently for him to get over Maya.”
Connor’s heart sank. He pushed open the door and stared at Serena with a deathly pale face.[]
“You drugged my drink back then?“[]
All these years, he’d thought he’d lost control after drinking too much. After all, he loved Maya to his core and had absolutely no interest in other
women.
Now he finally learned that Serena had drugged him.[]
“Connor…” Serena jumped up in fright, instinctively hiding behind Connor’s mother.[]
Connor’s mother stepped forward to protect her. “I knew about this. I wanted Serena to be our daughter–in–law. In my eyes, Emma is the true Mitchell

granddaughter. Now that Maya and her daughter are both dead, it’s for the best. While you were unconscious, I already had Maya’s body sent for cremation. Your breakdown needs to have limits, don’t…“]]
“What did you say!” Connor suddenly grabbed his mother’s arm, his gaze sharp as a blade. He glared at his mother through gritted teeth. “What did you do to Maya?”
His mother froze. “I sent her for… for cremation.”
“Which funeral home?” Connor tightened his grip. When his mother hesitated, Connor roared, “I asked you which funeral home!“}]
“East side, I sent her to the east side.” His mother’s voice was trembling. As soon as she finished speaking, Connor rushed out without looking back.
His mother stood frozen in place, a chill running through her entire body.
She seemed to have seen hatred in Connor’s eyes just now.
Connor ran several red lights and even crashed into a tree on the roadside. Despite being dizzy and disoriented, he didn’t stop the car and drove all the way to the funeral home, where he was greeted by an urn with Maya’s photo on it.]
Connor stumbled forward and clutched the urn to his chest. He collapsed to the ground, crying softly like a child who had lost his most beloved toy, his entire world turning gray.
He finally brought Maya’s urn back home and held it all day, not going to work and hiding in his room.[]
He gave Serena three days to move out. Emma cried and clung to Serena, not wanting her to leave. But this time, he no longer softened, just saying that
if Emma kept crying, she could get out too
Connor kept Emma by his side only for two reasons.
First, Emma was innocent, and second, Emma’s body contained he and Maya’s daughter’s heart.]
On the last day of the three–day deadline, Serena had taken Emma for a medical checkup early in the morning and wasn’t home when a man came looking for her.
The butler thought he was Serena’s friend and brought him inside. In the living room, Connor sat holding the urn and looked at the man. “What’s the problem?”
Seeing the scene before him, the man couldn’t help but break into a cold sweat, then forced himself to suppress his discomfort. “Who are you? Can you speak for Serena?”
“Sure.“]
“Perfect. I’m here to let Serena know that our monthly arrangement just got more expensive–we’re going from ten grand a month to fifteen grand.“[]
“What arrangement?” Connor’s brow furrowed. “Why the hell would she be paying you anything?”
