Chapter 4
Lydia and I were out shopping for suitcases, preparing for our upcoming trip.]
Just then we ran into Steven’s secretary. []
She was picking out a ring, and when she saw us, her smile was full of provocation.
ope you didn’t have a fight with the bass after that last time.” []
“Miss Stewart, I hope
I might
have been a bit harsh, but Miss Stewart, don’t be upset. Men work hard out there, and we women should keep our place, or else when we get old and lose our looks, we’ll be replaced by someone younger and prettier.”
Her words implied that Lydia was getting old.
There was also a deeper meaning–her use of “we” hinted at a closer relationship with Steven.
This was unbearable. [
Lydia, with her fiery femper, couldn’t take it and was ready to confront her right then and there.
But I couldn’t let her do something that would leave evidence against us. []
So I stepped in first and slapped the secretary hard. |
“You’ve got some nerve, feeling superior for being a mistress”
Who gave you the audacity to flaunt in front of the wife?
Seeing her fake, dramatic posture and the way her eyes darted nervously. I knew she was up to something.
Sure enough, just after I hit her, I heard footsteps behind me.
Lydia and I turned around to see Steven approaching.
He didn’t even look at Lydia; he went straight to the secretary’s side. Seeing her swollen face, he turned to me with anger.
“Marcus has spoiled you too much.”
Lydia worried I’d clash with Steven directly, quickly stepped in front of me.
“This isn’t Kylie’s fault. She provoloed us first, and you” ||
But before she could finish, he cut her off
“And you’re still defending her? Do you think I can’t tell right from wrong?” ||
When did you to become like this?” ||
