You’re chasing a ghost.”
Mom added, “Your birthday is in a week’s time, which will mark the date of your three years spent searching for her. You’ll turn twenty–one. Your misery is spreading like a plague in the pack because you are their future Alpha. They are restless about the fact that if you will be able to lead them in this condition?”
I rubbed my face with my hands. “Even dad got married when he was twenty–eight.
“How can you compare your father’s situation with yours?” mom snapped. “The Vaslof line was cursed. That’s the reason why your father refused to marry. He succumbed to the Elders‘ pressure only to find a breeder. But that is not the case with you. The curse is broken, and you can find a mate without the fear of her getting killed because of a curse. Do you even understand the gravity of the situation?”
Father pushed off the doorframe and closed the gap between us. He came to stand in front of me and put his hands on my shoulder. “We are doing Luna trials so that you may find the best mate for yourself. I’m not saying that you choose a Luna, but our pack members deserve this. You are a leader above anything else. You have a duty towards them, and they want to be assured that they have an able Alpha to lead them. Your misery is a cause of concern amongst many pack members. And it’ll be three years in a week’s time since we last saw you genuinely happy.”
I clenched my jaw, and turned away from Dad. He was right, but I wasn’t convinced. “You will be setting up a precedent after this game,” I warned him. “This is the first Luna trial and pack members will keep expecting it every year.”
“Isn’t that nice?” mom intervened. “We are planning to invite Alphas and Alpha candidates from other packs as well to take part in it along with Luna candidates. Since fated mates are not common, it will give them all an opportunity to mingle with each other and find the best chosen mate. And you’ll be surprised, we have also invited a human candidate.”
I whipped my head to look at her. “Human? For Luna trials?”
My mom shrugged, a small smile playing on her lips. “Yes, humans are growing impatient with us. They feel that we aren’t letting them integrate into our society. They want to enhance their gene pool.” She emphasized the word enhance.
“But what about the treaty?” I asked.
Father chuckled. “Humans are messy people. They will find a way around any treaty if it suits their purpose. However, we don’t have any issues. We’ve asked them to send one candidate who would be able to compete with other she–wolves. Though it is highly unlikely she would be able to compete, it’s fine as long as humans don’t have any issue. She’ll just go back home.”
“And who is this human girl?”
“Laura Morelli. She is the daughter of the head of the Italian mafia in the country. Other humans were too scared to send their daughters. I believe that they want to experiment with Laura first.”
“And Laura agreed?” Shock was an understatement for what I felt. How would a human contend with she–wolves? I turned and walked toward the window, deep in thought.

“I’m still finding this absurd!” I replied. Just didn’t want to participate in any game to choose my Luna. Actually I didn’t want anyone other than Summer, I had spent three years finding her, and I would spend the rest of my life doing so. She ran away that night and I didn’t even come to know. That was the biggest regret of my life.
“Brad,” mom blew out a breath. “The whole pack is worried sick and you won’t listen to us.”
I took a deep breath in. At the end of the trials, I would come out unmated. Yes, that was my plan. “Okay,” I agreed in an exasperated voice. “I’ll do this for you.” But I wouldn’t choose any human or she–wolf. They could go to hell for all I cared. Yes, I would put on a good show for my pack members just to make them feel happy. Year after year, I would pretend. The Luna trials would be the bane of my existence, but I would never walk out of there with a ball and chain attached.
