Chapter 4
I just couldn’t stay any longer, turning around to leave, when suddenly, Clay’s phone in the hospital room rang out of nowhere.
“Riley?” His voice instantly softened. “What’s wrong?”
On the other end, Riley’s sobbing voice came through, all fuzzy and unclear, but Clay’s face. paled.
He ripped off his IV needle from the back of his hand, blood immediately oozing out and staining his clothes, but he seemed to feel no pain at all.
“Clay!” Zane grabbed him, his voice thick with anger.“Where are you going? Your wounds aren’t healed! The doctor said you can’t leave the hospital!”
Clay shrugged him off, his tone icy cold.“Riley’s scared of thunderstorms. I have to be with her.”
Zane’s face turned pale with rage, “Are you damn serious? You’re willing
damn serious? You’re willing to risk your life for Riley? What about Maya? She just gave you a blood transfusion! Have you even considered. asking her how she’s doing?”
Clay paused, but ultimately didn’t turn back.
He didn’t even grab his jacket, just pushed the door open and left, not even noticing me standing outside.
I watched him go, silent for a long time, finally letting out a short, bitter laugh..
I should be used to this by now.
When Riley cried, Clay’s world felt like it was collapsing.
And me?
Even if I bled to death in front of him, he wouldn’t even glance my way.
Two days later, Clay finally returned.
As he opened the door, I was sitting on the couch, sorting out my tickets and documents.
My tightly wound nerves loosened slightly, but I forced myself to stay calm, though my gaze kept flitting away unconsciously.
“Maya,” his voice came from above my head, carrying a rare tenderness, “I heard. you donated blood for me? How foolish.”
I calmly put away my documents, without looking up.
“I’m glad you’re okay.”
Clay seemed oblivious to my coolness, sitting beside me and holding my hand.
“Riley interrupted our last proposal. This time, I’ve prepared a new banquet to make it up to you.”

I finally looked at him.
Only then do I notice that, due to blood loss and refusing hospitalization, his face looks terrible–almost colorless.
“Forget it,” I said softly. “What if Riley faints again?”
Clay frowned, his tone certain.“It won’t happen this time. I didn’t invite her.”
I smiled.
He didn’t get my sarcasm.
But I didn’t say anything else, just pressed my lips and nodded lightly.
On the way to the banquet, Clay was driving. I sit in the passenger seat, watching the scenery rush past outside the window.
Suddenly, his phone rang.
He answered quickly. Riley’s heart–wrenching cries filled the receiver.
“Clay! I’ve been kidnapped! They’re going to kill me-”
Clay’s face turned ghostly pale instantly
He slammed on the brakes, opening a tracking app, a flashing red dot appearing on the screen.
“Hold on!”

He roared, spun the wheel, and the car screeched, turning sharply toward the outskirts of the city.
I was thrown against the door by the sudden turn, my forehead smashing hard against the glass, blood streaming down. my brow.
But Clay didn’t seem to notice; his entire focus was on Riley’s safety.
The car sped wildly down the highway, finally stopping at an abandoned bridge. Outside, rain was pouring down in sheets. I couldn’t see clearly ahead, but I could make out Riley being held at knifepoint by a man, standing at the edge of the bridge.
“Clay Sterling! You finally came!”
The man yelled hysterically, his voice crazed.“You ruined my company, Now, I want to make you lose the one you love most!”

wife to suicide!
Clay got out of the car, soaked his suit, but he seemed unfazed by the cold, walking towards the
man.
“You’ve got it all wrong,” his voice was icy.“The person I love most isn’t her.”
The man froze, his knife wavering slightly.“What?”
Clay’s voice was cold as steel.“Haven’t you investigated? You’re holding my ex–girlfriend. I was paralyzed back then, she left me, and I hated her for it.”

Then he turned to look at me in the car, his eyes filled with a depth of emotion that could drown
a man.
I froze.
This was the first time Clay looked at me like this.
But why, why now?
Why at this moment?
