Chapter 2
Janet Johnson first heard the name “Helen Rodriguez”
during a courtroom trial a year prior.
As defense attorney for the opposing side, Helen had debated Janet in
court.
Helen was unbearably sanctimonious, lacking legal expertise while constantly moralizing.
She’d defended a seventy–year–old man accused of molesting his neighbor’s young daughter.
After the trial, Helen confronted Janet emotionally, spouting platitudes: “Have you no compassion? He’s old and lonely–that’s why he acted out.”
“Must you condemn him to die alone in prison?”
Justin Nelson learned of the incident and held Janet close, his gaze darkening. “That ungrateful wretch… Should I handle her for you, darling?”
Janet declined.
Six months later,
Justin hired Helen as Nelson Manor House’s legal counsel.
He’d coaxed Janet softly, “Darling, we were short–staffed. Besides, isn’t her self–righteousness amusing?”

Over time, Helen’s name surfaced increasingly in Justin’s conversations.
Secure in Justin’s love, Janet never viewed Helen as a threat.
Yet now, Justin had sacrificed Janet’s entire family just to make Helen smile.
“Fine, I agree.” Janet’s heart plunged into frozen stillness.
She swiftly signed the contract Justin offered. After the final stroke of her pen, she turned and strode out without glancing back.
Just outside, her mother’s frantic call came:
“Janet! Come to the hospital your sister attempted suicide!”
Janet raced to the hospital to find her mother bowing desperately to doctors while cradling her sister’s bleeding neck.
“Please save my daughter!

Her body’s still warm. I’ve tried stopping the blood–she can survive!”
Rachel Johnson’s hair was disheveled, forehead bruised.
Doctors exchanged uneasy glances. “All ER staff are ordered by Mr. Nelson to stand by. We’re needed for Ms. Rodriguez’s beloved pet.”
Janet staggered, lunging forward with bloodshot eyes to grab a departing doctor.
“Vets treat animals! Will you let my sister die here?”
The doctor shook her off. “Mr. Nelson warned if that dog dies, we’ll pay dearly.”

Janet knelt slowly beside them, tidal waves of agony crashing through
her.
She slapped her own face repeatedly.
“My fault… I killed her.”
Rachel gripped Janet’s bloodstained hand–her younger daughter’s blood.
Tear–swollen eyes hardened with resolve.
“We’ll take her away from this place, dear.
I’ll find help. In seven days, we complete official deregistration and emigrate–never to return This book had been added on your bookshelf.
