Chapter 8
By the time she snapped back to reality, she darted over to shut off the video at top speed.
But the bodyguards seemed to have anticipated it, blocking Janet completely.
Amidst the surrounding jeers and whispers, Janet’s mind throbbed.
“That woman looks so familiar.”
“Didn’t you see? She resembles that lawyer surnamed Shen.”
“Isn’t that her sister? I heard her sister was assaulted.”
“You still believe that? Look how much she’s enjoying it. The younger sister’s this wild, the older sister would be even better.”
Only when the video neared its end did Helen finally signal to turn it off.
She cleared her throat at Janet, meeting her gaze calmly as if she’d done nothing wrong.
“Don’t be upset, Janet. This case is settled anyway.”
“Besides, since your sister did… that, and my client hasn’t complained, why should you care?”
Blinded by rage, Janet lunged at Helen with unexpected strength, slapping her hard across the face.
Helen stumbled straight into Justin’s arms.

Sean took one look at Helen’s reddened cheek, his eyes turning icy.
He glared at Janet like he wanted to kill her. “Janet, have you lost your mind?!”
Janet’s hands still trembled, her composure shattered.
She let out a scornful laugh. “Where were you when they aired my sister’s private video? Playing dead?”
“Suddenly your blindness clears up when Helen gets slapped?”
“Justin, have you forgotten our agreement?”
Perhaps startled by Janet’s uncharacteristic fury, Justin dialed back his coldness, adopting a commanding tone.
“I can silence everyone here today. Our deal stands.”
“But if you break it, next time it’ll be your mother’s video playing.”
Janet swallowed the metallic taste in her mouth again and again.
No amount of willpower could stop her tears now.
She gave up fighting, her voice hollow.
“I’ll remember today for the rest of my life, Justin.”
Watching Janet’s resolute figure retreat, Justin felt an odd tightness in his chest.
Then Helen’s ragged sobs reached his ears.
The last trace of warmth vanished from his eyes.

Janet had barely stepped out of the banquet hall when someone threw a hood over her head and dragged her into an alley.
Though she repeatedly warned them this was criminal assault–and that she was a lawyer–they didn’t stop.
They pinned Janet down efficiently, propping up a phone to record.
One man stepped forward and slapped her hard across the face.
Her ears rang from the blow, but before she could react, more slaps followed.
They rained down endlessly.
Soon Janet struggled to breathe, her face swollen and burning, too weak
even to cry.
As her consciousness faded,
she saw them send the video out.
Along with a voice message.
“Mr. Nelson, the ninety–nine slaps are done.”
“Okay, got it.”
The cold male voice on the phone turned into the last resounding slap, striking Janet
After that group left, Janet’s body went weak and she slumped to the ground.
For a moment, she couldn’t tell whether her body hurt more or her heart.
