Chapter 12
Chapter 12
“Dinner with a friend?“]]
Hannah repeated my words, then burst out laughing.
“Sorry, Claire. I just couldn’t help myself.“[]
“But I have to say, I’m surprised. Unemployed, and you can still afford to eat at a place like this.“]
I could hear the sarcasm in her voice, implying I was lying and putting on a front.[]
“Claire, I never thought you’d turn out like this,” Liam added, his gaze full of disgust.[]
Seeing their reactions, I didn’t bother to explain further.[]
He wouldn’t believe me anyway. It would just be a waste of breath.[]
My silence only made Liam think I was guilty.[]
It confirmed Hannah’s judgment in his eyes.[]
He sneered. “Life’s tough without me, isn’t it? Regretting your decision now?“]
I found it laughable.[]
It seemed he still didn’t know I was working at Olivia’s company.[]
Then again, he had never been interested in what I was doing.]]
It was only natural that he wouldn’t know now that we were broken up.]
I was about to say something, but he sighed with a tone of grave sincerity.[]
“I wasn’t going to forgive you.“]
“But we were a couple, after all. I’m not completely devoid of feelings for you. And you did come all this way for me.“[]
“I’ll give you one more chance. Don’t screw it up.“[]
At this, I couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow and glance at Hannah.[]
She had clearly just heard this for the first time. Panic flickered across her face.]]
But she didn’t dare say anything. After a long pause, she finally stammered, “Mr. Moore, you should think this through. Going back to an ex is never a good idea.“[]
I almost laughed.[]
It seemed the two of them hadn’t discussed this beforehand.[]
Chapter 12
Liam ignored Hannah and continued sneering at me. “Did you hear that, Claire? A lot of my friends have been telling me not to get back with you, to cut my losses.“]
“They all think you’re not good enough for me anymore!“]]
“Do you know how many people told me to break up with you every single day? But I kept tolerating you, for the sake of our relationship.“]
“I honestly don’t know what got into you, or whose advice you took, to make you
break up
with me.
- “D
“Everyone knew how lucky you were. Only you didn’t appreciate it.“[]
“…“O
Liam droned on and on.[]
Yes.
His net worth was now far greater than mine. He had reminded me more than once of the imbalance in our relationship, saying he only stayed with me out of nostalgia for our years together.[]
I used to treat his comments as a joke between us. It was only later that I realized he was serious.]
In his eyes, the reason we hadn’t broken up.[]
Was self–interest, nostalgia, pity–but never love.[]
I was about to say something when Olivia’s voice cut in from the side.[]
“Claire, who are these two?“]]
