When the flames erupted, my mother and a wooden chest were both trapped inside.[]
A burning beam crashed down between them.]]
There was only time to save one.[]

Mirena Voss was sobbing her heart out. “That chest… it’s all my mother’s keepsakes. Everything she left behind!“[]
I dropped to my knees in front of my husband without thinking. “Grayson! Please, save my mom first!“]
But Grayson Langford hesitated.[]
He glanced at me, eyes full of struggle.[]
“Sera, your mother’s important,”
“But so is what Mirena’s mom left behind.“[]
My blood ran cold as his next words hit me.]

“How is my mother’s life worth less than some stupid box?!” I screamed.]
Grayson shook off my grip. “Stop being dramatic, Sera. We’re not abandoning your mom. Just wait a few more minutes.”
But he knew damn well my mother had a heart condition. Every second counted. And lifting one side of the beam meant crushing weight on the other side. How could she survive that?
At his command, his men immediately got to work, lifting the beam off the chest.
My mother coughed up blood.[]
I lunged forward to help her, but Grayson blocked me. “Stay out of the way.”
“You’re gonna kill her!” I screamed, clawing at his hands. “Let me go!”
The rescue team was all Langford security. They looked reluctant but followed orders anyway.[]
Grayson shoved me back hard, veins bulging on his forehead. “That chest has everything Mirena’s mom left behind! If it burns, Mirena will have nothing. How’s she supposed to live with that?“]
Mirena was sobbing. “Sera, I’m so sorry, but I can’t lose it. It’s all I have left of my mom…“[]
“She’s a living person!” I screamed through my tears. “A human being!“]

I grabbed the nearest guard, shaking him. “Save my mother! Please!“]]
He stumbled back, annoyed. “Mr. Langford said the chest comes first!“]]
Through the smoke, my mom’s voice was barely a whisper from the rubble. “Help… me…“[]
I went crazy trying to stop them, but Grayson’s grip was like a vice. I kicked and bit him, but couldn’t break free.[]
I watched helplessly as all the weight crushed down on my mother. Her face went white as paper.[]
“Grayson, let me go!” Tears blurred my vision.[]
“Just calm down. The chest will be gone forever if it burns. Your mom can hold on a little longer.“[]
“Hold on for what? To die?!“]]
Grayson’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t let go. His eyes stayed fixed on Mirena.[]
The chest hit the ground with a heavy thud.]]]
Then came my mother’s agonizing scream.[]
My heart shattered.]]]
“Thank God,” Mirena sobbed, throwing herself over the chest. “Mom’s things are safe.“[]
Grayson finally released me. I crawled over the debris on my hands and knees.[]
Under the rubble, my mom was pinned from the waist down, only her head visible.[]
“Mom, you’re gonna be okay. Just hang on…” My voice shook.[]
She looked up at me with fading eyes, blood trickling from her mouth. “Sweet girl… be happy. Live… happily.“]
The beam came crashing down completely just as Grayson was carrying Mirena out, her leg scraped and bleeding.]
“MOM!” I screamed.[]
Grayson glanced back at me, his face full of irritation. Like my breakdown was just another tantrum.[]
For one second. Then he turned away, rushing Mirena to safety, whispering comfort in her ear.]
Good Samaritans finally helped put out the fire. But Mom was still trapped underneath.[]
I tore at the rubble with my bare hands, nails ripping and bleeding. I didn’t feel anything.[]
Twenty minutes later, we pulled Mom out.]]
She was barely breathing.]
The butler appeared beside me, looking down coldly.[]
