Chapter 13%
As soon as Kai got back to his room, his lawyer called.
The lawyer was as anxious as a cat on a hot tin roof, constantly urging him to sign the divorce papers quickly.
Kai gripped his phone tightly, his brow furrowed, a growing sense of panic welling up inside him.}}
The lawyer kept reminding him on the other end, “Mr. Lockwood, if you don’t agree to the divorce, we’ll have to go to court. You personally signed the prenuptial agreement and that document is legally binding. While we’ll do our best, success depends on the circumstances.“}]
Kai froze, the contents of that prenuptial agreement flashing through his mind.
Back then, he thought he and I would never reach this point. He’d signed it with hardly any hesitation, simply seeing it as a document to protect his own interests.
He never thought that this agreement would become the key to his irreversible situation.
Suddenly, he felt an unprecedented surge of panic.
A strong sense of unease rose from the depths of his heart; his once confident sense of control was slowly crumbling.
This prenuptial agreement made him realize he could no longer control me. Even the whereabouts of Scott and me felt like they’d been severed by an invisible blade.
He quickly hung up and, without a pause, dialled his private investigator’s number.
He ordered the detective to find out where I’d gone. After arranging that, he still felt uneasy. He started calling everyone he knew who knew me, like a madman, asking about my whereabouts.}
The phone kept ringing, each call making him more irritated.§
Amidst all his frantic calls, he finally reached Scott’s school. The answer he received sent him plummeting into an ice cave.
“Scott Lockwood has already withdrawn,” the receptionist’s words on the other end sent Kai’s heart plummeting. Withdrawn?
I’d even completed the withdrawal procedures from school.
A strange fear instantly gripped Kai, a fear that he might never be able to hold onto Scott and me again.}
Meanwhile, Scott’s and my lives were gradually settling into a different rhythm.}
Although physically and mentally exhausted, I felt a deep sense of relief.}
Scott’s recovery far exceeded my expectations. While his mood was unstable at times during the recovery process, with the doctor’s careful attention, his body gradually improved and the scars on his hand had mainly healed.
Every time I saw his innocent smile, I felt I had no regrets.}
After all, as long as Scott was happy and healthy, I could keep going.”
Soon, I underwent my facial surgery and lay in the hospital bed, my whole body feeling numb.
Scott stayed glued to my side, his eyes fixed on me, as if waiting for any reaction.
“Mom, are you okay?” Scott asked carefully, his voice a little shaky.”
I gently patted his hand, trying to force a smile. “I am fine, baby. Don’t worry.”
Still, Scott was uneasy. He clutched my hand tightly, as if he’d lose me if I let go.”
His eyes held a dependence and anxiety I’d never seen before.}}
My heart ached seeing him like this.
“Mom, I’m going to stay with you every day from now on. I won’t leave you,” Scott’s eyes welled up with tears, his voice so soft it was almost inaudible.
I reached out and stroked his hair, comforting him softly, “Baby, I will always be with you, forever and never leave you.”
Just then, there was a gentle knock on the door and Sebastian pushed it open.
