Chapter 14
Sebastian was wearing a simple white surgical gown with a gentle smile on his face.
“Scott, your mom is going to be okay now. You don’t have to worry anymore.” Sebastian walked into the hospital room and spoke softly to comfort the little boy.
Scott raised his head and looked at Sebastian. He was somewhat dependent on this familiar big brother, but also a little strange. He nervously fidgeted with his small hands and quietly asked, “Are you a doctor? Can you heal my mom’s injuries?“}]
Sebastian smiled and squatted down to be at eye level with Scott. “I’m not your mom’s doctor, but I can help her recover. She’ll get better very quickly.”
Scott’s eyes gradually relaxed and a slight smile appeared on his face. “That’s good, then. Thank you, Doctor.“}
A subtle hint of worry flickered in Sebastian’s eyes. He quietly observed Scott for a moment, realizing that Scott’s emotions seemed more complex than they appeared on the surface.
Though the child looked well–behaved and sensible, the deep sadness in his eyes couldn’t help but cause concern.}
I also noticed Sebastian’s gaze and frowned slightly. “What’s wrong? You look like you have something to say.“}]
Sebastian slowly shook his head, hesitant to speak directly. He asked the nurse to take Scott to get something to eat. Only after they left did he speak. “Carolyn, I’m a little worried about Scott. This child seems to have some autistic tendencies.“}
I stiffened, my heart clenching. “Autistic? How can that be?“>
Although I knew Scott was more or less hurt inside after everything he’d been through, I never thought his psychological issues would be
so severe.
Sebastian sighed, his tone heavy. “Scott’s emotional responses are quite slow. Compared to children his age, he lacks the desire to communicate with others and is less willing to interact with the outside world. Although on the surface he seems very well–behaved and sensible, his inner self is blocking certain things. His emotions aren’t fully expressed; instead, they’re deeply buried in his heart, forming an invisible barrier.”
I froze and a sharp pain struck my chest.
“Are you saying he has a psychological disorder?“}
Sebastian nodded, a hint of helplessness in his eyes. “You could say it’s a manifestation of depression. Scott’s emotions are unstable and he often experiences feelings of loss and loneliness, especially now that his reactions to the outside world are becoming increasingly sluggish. He needs timely psychological counseling and treatment, or it could get worse.”
I lowered my head, my eyes reddened and my voice choked. “Scott has suffered so much during this time. Besides his father’s beatings, the most terrifying thing was our dog … ”
I suddenly stopped, feeling a sharp pain in my heart, thinking that the once cheerful and warm little life was cooked and eaten. I couldn’t bear this sadness, let alone Scott.”
He was probably just holding back his emotions now, pretending to be fine, afraid of upsetting.me.}]
Sebastian’s expression became even more serious, his voice low. “Carolyn, this kind of experience causes immense psychological trauma to a child. His current condition is very likely due to this. Coupled with your own recent physical condition, the child isn’t getting effective psychological counseling, which is why his emotional problems are constantly escalating.”
I pursed my lips, my voice almost inaudible. “I’ve never been able to handle these things with Scott. I could only try to maintain a superficial normalcy, thinking it would get better someday, but I knew myself that I wasn’t doing it right.“@
