Chapter 70
When Kai got home, the dim light by the door cast a faint yellow glow, but his mood felt swallowed by an endless darkness.} This house used to be full of laughter and warmth. Every time he came home, I’d be there with Scott, greeting him with a smile.
But today, the house was empty and even the air was suffocatingly silent.
A surge of panic hit him. He quickened his pace, practically running upstairs. His voice was urgent, “Carolyn? Scott?”
He burst into the room to find the nanny tidying up.
“Where are my wife and son? Where did they go?” Kai’s voice rose unintentionally, his anxiety bubbling over.
The nanny lowered her head, her voice hesitant. “Mr. Lockwood, Madam and your son
“Left?” Kai’s head buzzed as if he’d been struck.
www
they’ve left.”
He reeled, his gaze sweeping the room. In the living room, Scott’s toys and his belongings were gone without a trace.
My clothes were also nowhere to be found.
It would have been impossible to pack these things silently, yet he hadn’t noticed a thing.}
We had vanished from this house without him knowing when.
“What happened? Why did she leave?” Kai’s voice was hoarse, his emotions almost out of control.
The nanny whispered, “I’m not sure, Madam didn’t tell me anything when she left.“}
Kai’s heart pounded violently, a sense of panic clawing at his chest like some invisible beast.}
He felt like he was losing his mind.
He walked into my bedroom, where every inch of air carried my scent, as if I hadn’t left.”
He pulled out his phone, dialling my number repeatedly, silently praying.”
Sadly, only the cold sound of an unanswered call met him.
“Carolyn …” His voice broke as he whispered my name, the weight of it nearly crushing him.”
Then, he abruptly turned around, yanked open the curtains and looked down.
In an instant, his pupils constricted violently and his blood ran cold.
The backyard, that meticulously cared–for garden, was now scorched black. All the beautiful memories we had shared had turned to
ashes.
When did this happen?
It was then that Kai realized he hadn’t paid attention to me or Scott’s whereabouts for a long time.”
A tearing sensation in his heart made it almost impossible to breathe.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” he demanded, turning to the servants, gritting his teeth.
The servant looked at him with a pale face, obviously shocked by this scene as well.
“Mr. Lockwood, we didn’t know this would happen. And you you didn’t seem to notice,” the servant replied stutteringly.
…
Kai felt consumed by fear and anger, his face darkening completely.
The unease inside him grew stronger by the second.
He hadn’t expected that I would actually decide to leave.
He had kept telling himself that I wouldn’t go, that I couldn’t possibly abandon everything and take the child away from him.}
But looking at the scorched earth, he finally realized that I had decided to cut all ties with him.”
I was gone, truly gone.}
He took a deep breath, his mind racing back through the years.
He remembered the first time he saw me at the company, that indescribable attraction.
At the time, even though his ex–wife had passed away only a year or two prior, he hadn’t fallen in love with anyone else. He hadn’t even had a serious relationship.
No woman had truly caught his eye.”
