Genevieve’s POV
Captain Shelton had already made up his mind that I was the killer.”
Even after watching me try to take my own life, he still thought I was faking it. In his eyes, it was just a desperate stunt to gain sympathy and clear my name.”
I gave a weak smile, my voice barely audible.
“I’m innocent,” I said. “I just don’t want to die without knowing the truth.“}
Captain Shelton scoffed and didn’t say another word. But the look he gave me was like saying I was some heartless criminal refusing to repent.
Despite that, I just closed my eyes, trying to conserve what little strength I had left.”
At the hospital, the doctors rushed to save me. They quickly stopped the bleeding, stitched the wound, and transferred me to a room to rest.
But Captain Shelton wasn’t letting me out of his sight. He had officers posted right outside my hospital room, watching me around the clock.
I spent some time carefully observing everything, looking for an opening.
Later, when I asked to use the restroom, I saw my chance. I climbed out of the bathroom window and escaped.”
By the time anyone noticed, I was long gone, vanished right under their noses.}
Iran as fast as I could, sprinting through overgrown fields until I reached a familiar place: a solitary grave.”
My father’s grave.
Every year during Memorial Day, my mom would bring my sister and me here to pay our respects.
But even now, I still didn’t know how my dad had died.}
I could only remember that when I was young, my mom used to stare at my dad’s picture when my sister and I had already fallen asleep. One time, I remembered waking up in the middle of the night to see my mom doing the same thing. I couldn’t hold back my curiosity back then and asked, “Mom, how did Dad die?”
She stayed quiet for a long time. Then, with a distant look in her eyes, she said, “You’ll understand when you’re older.“>
Well, I was older now.!
So, I thought it was time for me to understand.
I stood before his grave and gave a deep, respectful bow. Then I crouched down and started digging.
Handful after handful, I clawed through the dirt.
With every scoop, my heart beat faster.}
But just as I started picking up speed, I heard a sharp voice behind me.
“What are you doing?!“}
It was my mom.
Her voice was cold and fierce. Her face was hard to read–part shocked, part furious.§
I froze, my hands still in the dirt, and looked up at her.”
“I’m trying to confirm a theory,” I said.”
Then i turned back to the grave and kept digging faster this time.”
That pushed her over the edge./
She rushed over and grabbed my arm tightly, yelling, “Are you out of your mind?! What kind of theory makes you dig up your father’s grave?! Do you want him to be disturbed even in death?!“}
My mother had always been gentle, calm, soft–spoken, and rarely ever angry.”
But now, her eyes were bloodshot. Her forehead was tense with rage. She was also gripping me so hard that I could barely move.
Just then, pain shot through my wrist. The stitches from earlier tore open again, and blood poured down my arm, soaking through the bandages.
But she didn’t even glance at it. She just glared at me like I’d done something unforgivable.
Her anger cut deep
But I didn’t back down.
Instead, I fought her off and kept digging harder and faster.
That made her snap. She grabbed me with everything she had, trying to pull me away.!!
We struggled. Whenever I dug, she would block me.
Neither of us was willing to give in
Just as things reached a breaking point, Captain Shelton showed up with a whole team of officers behind him.
And they weren’t alone.
A crowd of curious bystanders had also followed them, along with livestreamers and online reporters.

A crowd of curious bystanders had also followed them, along with livestreamers and online reporters.
Apparently, my escape from the hospital had caused quite the stir. So, concerned citizens had joined the search, and influencers were broadcasting everything in real time.
When word got out that I was here, everyone rushed over.
And the sight that greeted them?
Me, looking half–crazed, digging up my father’s grave.
Captain Shelton’s face darkened immediately. He stormed over, pulled me up, and slapped a pair of cuffs on my wrists again.
