Chapter 20 I Want To
At the entrance, Welburn bent down and took out a pair of Hermes wool slippers from the shoe cabinet, placing them in front of her.
Eileen looked at the brand–new women’s slippers. They hadn’t been there yesterday, which meant they were newly purchased.
“These are for…” She was always cautious when it came to such sensitive
matters.
If the slippers were meant for another female, it wouldn’t be appropriate for her to wear them.
After all, not having a girlfriend didn’t mean a man had no other kind of partner.
His face remained detached as he replied frankly, “We’ll be working together and meeting often from now on. These are for you.”
That answer was good enough for Eileen. She removed her high heels and coat and then went inside.
Welburn poured her a glass of water, then sat down on the armchair and got straight to the point, “You want a divorce?”
“Yes. But he refused and pulled some strings. Now no one would take my case.”
Welburn idly fiddled with his obsidian bracelet, his expression unreadable. “So, what are you thinking?”
Eileen looked down at the water in her glass. “I don’t want to go to court with him. I just want a skilled lawyer to help me divide the assets. We’ve
been together for years. I don’t want it to get ugly,”
She wasn’t confident. Welburn only agreed to continue the act to fulfill a close one’s last wish.
He had no bad blood with Fremont. Even if he had the right connections, would he cross Fremont for her?
However, if he wouldn’t help her, she didn’t know what else she could do.
Eileen felt like she’d reached the edge of a cliff, with no way forward.
Welburn’s silence unsettled her. She just kept her head down, waiting, her back damp with cold sweat.
The large living room was quiet. The door to the front courtyard was
open.
A desolate autumn wind blew in, chilling her back. Her clothes clung to her skin just like the tense atmosphere now.
The man rose and shut the door, blocking out the biting wind. Warm air from the heater surrounded her, driving away the cold.
“Sorry. If this is too much trouble for you, just pretend I never said anything.”
Feeling a shadow looming over her, Eileen looked up.
Welburn was standing right in front of her.
“Who said it’d be too much trouble for me?” For once, his voice was a bit emotional.
Eileen’s eyes immediately lit up with hope. She licked her dry lips and instinctively clutched her clothes, waiting for his answer.

Welburn stood in the nearly ten–meter–high living room. Above him, the crystal chandelier reflected cold light under the sun.
Behind him was a massive floor–to–ceiling window. The white stone columns at the joints were carved with intricate patterns, grand and imposing.
Even with a minimalist style, every detail in the villa screamed the owner’s immense power and wealth.
Fiddling with the obsidian bracelet, Welburn said in a low but majestic voice, “If you want a divorce, no one can stop you. Not even Fremont.”
At that moment, the sun broke through the clouds, flooding the room with warmth.
Backlit, he looked down at Eileen. Her fair skin looked flawless in the sunlight, and her delicate features were captivating. In an enchanting voice, he asked, “Tell me, do you want a divorce or not?”
Eileen stared at the man against the light. His sharply defined face was shrouded in shadows, exuding cruelty and brutality.
It felt as if a black demon had stepped out of pure white feathers, reaching out a hand to her.
And behind her stood Fremont, holding chains, trying to keep her bound at his side.
Before her lay an unknown path. She didn’t know what kind of future it would lead to.
But she was certain about one thing: she didn’t want to turn back.
Even if the road ahead was full of thorns, she had to try.
Her soft pink lips parted as she replied, “Yes, I do.”

She added firmly, “I want a divorce. Will you help me?”
His Adam’s apple moved as he swallowed. “Okay.”
She hadn’t expected him to agree so quickly. “If you help me, it might bring you some trouble.”
A meaningful gleam passed through Welburn’s eyes, and he replied flatly, “Don’t worry. He can’t touch me.”
Though his tone was flat, she caught a hint of disdain.
Everyone feared for Fremont. That guy could end her career with a single word, leaving her with no roles to act in and no lawyer to turn to.
But Welburn didn’t seem afraid of him at all.
Eileen stared at Welburn in a daze. “Why are you so…”

She didn’t finish her sentence as he suddenly grabbed her wrist. “Doesn’t it hurt?” he asked before she could pull away.
Eileen had only dabbed some iodine and slapped on a band–aid after injuring her hand at home.
After finding out what Fremont had done, she tore the band–aid off in a fit of rage. Just now, when she tensed up, the wound split open again.
Bright red had seeped into her white dress.
She replied, “It hurt at first… but now it just feels numb.”
The wound in her palm was like her soon–to–end marriage. When she just learned the truth, the pain had been unbearable. But what Fremont and his family did slowly tore her heart apart piece by piece until she no longer felt the pain.

Welburn released her hand and walked away. When he returned, he was carrying a medical kit.
Eileen quickly hid her hand behind her back. “It’s fine. I’m not that fragile. It’ll heal in three days max.”
But the tall man crouched down at her feet, taking out the iodine and a cotton swab.
Looking up, he commanded, “Give me your hand.”
Slowly, Eileen brought her hand out from behind her back and laid it open on the armrest.
She watched as the proud man knelt on one knee on the carpet and gently held her fingertips.
His body heat, like the faint sandalwood scent on him, curled up around her.
The iodine–soaked cotton swab touched her wound, and the woman, once pampered by Fremont, couldn’t help but cry out, “Welburn… it hurts…”
