Chapter 36
Since everyone crowded around Narissa, the people keeping Jaylen in check let him go. He said worriedly, “Gilbert, your really messed up this time,”
“Jaylen, I did it for you, Gilbert replied.
Jaylen said, “That’s Manny we’re talking about. Did you forget where he ranks on the international racing leaderboard?
“This isn’t just some casual race anymore. Even if Narissa is good, you think she’s better than Manny?”
“Honestly, I didn’t even think about that.” Gilbert admitted, finally looking a little scared.
Jaylen continued, “It’s a total mismatch–a rookie going up against a pro. This isn’t a race; it’s bullying. They’re just using their advantage to crush us fair and square.”
“So what do we do now? Should we try to stop it?” Gilbert asked.
Bang! The starting gun fired, and the racecars shot out of the starting line. It was already too late to stop anything.
“If something happens to Narissa because of me, I’ll never forgive myself,” Gilbert muttered, sweat dripping down his face.
Jaylen didn’t say a word, his expression tense. It wasn’t that they looked down on Narissa, but in their eyes, even if she was good, she was only a standout in the amateur scene..
If Narissa went up against someone ranked internationally, that was like comparing a child to a master.
Jaylen wondered, ‘Narissa should’ve known she can’t win–why will she take such a reckless bet? Does she not care about the risk of losing her hands?’
Either way, Narissa and Manny’s cars had already taken off the moment the gun went off. And one glance was enough to see that Manny’s car was clearly in the lead.
It was a seven–lap race. Whoever finished first would win.
And by the end of just the first lap, Narissa had already fallen behind by nearly half a lap. The skill gap was obvious.
Strangely, Narissa didn’t seem to be trying to catch up. Instead, she maintained a steady distance behind Manny the entire time.
It had to be because once she faced a real professional, Narissa realized she didn’t have the ability to chase him, let alone pass him.
“Told you, women aren’t cut out for high–stakes racing like this.” Stuart sneered with his buddies on the side.
Jaylen stood with his group, eyes locked on the racetrack.
When they saw Narissa consistently lagging behind, Gilbert dropped to the ground and started pounding his chest in despair. “I’m such an idiot. I never should’ve dragged her into this.
“This is all my fault. Even if she really loses her hands because of me, I’ll take responsibility. I’ll marry her–I’ll take care of her forever.”

Chapter 36
Jaylen clenched his fists, fighting the urge to kick Gilbert. He muttered, ‘Seriously? Now’s the time to cry?‘
“Look over there, someone’s already crying like a baby.”
“Didn’t we tell you? If you had just gotten on your knees and licked his shoes, we wouldn’t even need this race.”
Stuart’s crew burst out laughing when they saw Gilbert crying.
Stuart pointed at the track and sneered. “That bitch–I’ll be the one to cut her hands off and hand them to Mr. Conor as a
souvenir.”
+15
“Shut your damn mouth. No one knows who’s gonna win yet,” Gilbert snapped as he stood back up. He had to say something -losing was fine, but not without dignity.
Stuart laughed so hard his voice cracked. “What, you guys dreaming or something? An amateur beating a world–ranked pro? What is this, a drama show?”
Another wave of laughter swept through the crowd. Jaylen and his guys wanted to argue back, but the truth was hard to deny.
