Chapter 5
When Grayson stormed out into the corridor, it was empty–except for a drenched orange tabby cat crouched in the comer, blinking at him with wide
Claire followed a step behind, “It was just a cat,” she murmured. “You should go back to Savannah. I’ll call a cab.”
Grayson frowned. The storm outside raged on.
“Call a cab? In this heavy rain? No way. You’re staying with me.
Claire bit her lip, hesitating.
But what if Savannah
His fingers gripped her chin, tilting her face up.
“Who’s your man, Claire?”
Her cheeks flushed.
“Then listen to me.”
He took her hand and led her back into the hall
Sevens still sat in the same seat, eyes on the stage, the musk washing over her
Grayson exhaled in relief, gesturing to the empty seat beside her.
“It’s pouring out. She loves this kind of music too, so I asked her to stay.‘
Savannah nodded lightly. Said nothing more.
Throughout the rest of the performance, Grayson contined to tend to Savannah: rubbing her abdomen, adjusting her shawl, whispering if she needed to leave early.
But she knew–his left hand was laced with Claire’s the entire time.
She remembered the first time they held hands.
She was sixteen. A snowy night. He had climbed over the backyard fence, hands frozen red. He’d held them out to ber, grinning “Sav, my hands are freezing. Can you warm them for me?”
She had blushed and taken them, and he had never let go
Back then, he only had eyes for her.
Now? He held the right hand of her while the left hand another? At the same time.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Grayson caught it with his thumb, frowning-
“What’s wrong?”
“The music,” she smiled faintly. “It’s just really moving”
He chuckled, voice dripping with indulgence.
*Still such a soft baby, huh?”
She didn’t answer
After the show, the hall began to empty–bur Grayson didn’t let her leave.
Stagehands wheeled out a collection of rare instruments: a Steinway grand plano, a Stradivarius violin, and other string instruments that each looked priceless
You once said these were beautiful,” Grayson smiled. “I bought them all.”
A staff member leaned in, awestruck.

“Miss Reed, Mr. Whitmore pulled every string to get this set. Some were auctioned from private estates, some were borrowed from museumsa…
Claire stood in the shadows, her expression unreadable.
Savannah was about to respond when Claire, curiously, nagged at a velvet rope hanging beside the stage.
“What’s this?
“Don’t” one of the servers shouted, but it was too late.
A mechanical grinding filled the air.
In the next moment–a massive lighting rig and audio system came crashing down from above.
Grayson moved instantly, grabbing Claire and diving across the floor, shielding her with his body.
Savannah stood frozen. The shadows fell fast,
A sharp pain exploded through her body as the world tilted. Blood pooled around her vision. Her last sight was Grayson’s face, wide–eyed in panic, yelling
bername
“Savannah!”
But he wasn’t holding her.
“He was holding Claire.
