Chapter 7
His figure darted to the other side of the bed, his voice gentle as he comforted, “I’m right here. Our Vivi is the bravest little girl. Don’t cry.”
The sound of the rolling hospital bed gradually faded away.
Scarlett rubbed her wrist where I had grabbed her, looking smug. “You don’t dare bet with me because you already know who he’ll choose.”
I gave her a dismissive glance.[]
“I’m not interested in making stupid bets to test a man’s sincerity.“[]
“Maybe before, I would have loved a qualified husband, a responsible father.“[]
“But at this moment, I can’t forgive a wavering, untrustworthy man–a father who failed his responsibilities.”
“What you’re trying to steal–it’s worthless to me now.” “D
With that, I turned and left.[]
Behind me, Scarlett’s angry voice followed.]
“Stop pretending. You’re just a low–paid white–collar worker who moved up in society through marriage. Don’t act like you’re such a catch!”
Outside, the rain was pouring heavily.
People hurried by as I clutched the hot soup I’d bought and squeezed into the hospital.[]
In the ward, River was sound asleep, one foot in a cast.
Nearby, a man in black was quietly keeping watch.]
When he saw mejenter, he stood up. “You’re soaking wet. Shouldn’t you change your clothes first?” He quickly grabbed a towel
I took it with one hand and offered him the soup with the other.]
“Thank you so much for staying with us all this time without even eating.“[]
“Can I have your bank account number? Just to show my appreciation.“]
The voice in front of me sounded somewhat resigned.[]
“Aurora, you really don’t remember me?”
I hesitated, looking up and trying to find something familiar–the man had short brown hair, sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, and tender brown pupils, and a slightly mischievous upturned corner of his lips.]
His features did seem familiar…]

Nick? Suddenly I remembered!]]
That thin, shy junior from the university lab who always smiled bashfully.[]
“You’ve changed so much, I didn’t recognize you,” I continued to examine him.[]
“After graduation, I joined the military. Now I’m out and working at my family’s search company, just getting by. Today I got an urgent assignment, and I never expected it would be…“]
I smiled faintly. “Life is unpredictable. I never thought we’d meet again. Either way, River and I both owe you our thanks today.“]
“It’s nothing,” he smiled, then his voice became hesitant.[]
“But what are you planning to do next?“[]
Indeed, I hadn’t thought about this question yet.[]
Too much had happened today-
My hysteria on the island, the helplessness outside the operating room, the mess at the hospital… Extreme emotions seemed to have drained all my expressions and thoughts.
I gently stroked River’s pale little face.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.“]]
“Whatever path you choose, I’m willing to help,” Nick’s gentle voice came from beside me.[]
But I didn’t notice his affectionate gaze.]]
“Thank you.“]]
In the days that followed, Nick often came to the hospital to visit.[]
River was doing much better, though at first he asked where his daddy was, but later stopped mentioning it.[]
With Nick’s help, I was able to take some time away from the hospital to handle urgent matters.
First, I returned to Zane’s villa, found the divorce agreement and signed it, then packed up River’s and my belongings and sent them to another apartment.
Even as the villa became empty, its other owner never returned.[]
Thinking about this, I couldn’t help but mock my own unnecessary thoughts.
Now that Zane had reunited with his first love and discovered another child of his blood, they had probably reconciled.]
Why would he bother to come back?
I took one last look at the home where I had lived for five years, blocked and deleted that number from my phone, then removed the SIM card and tossed it away.
The person who betrayed me didn’t deserve my lingering attachment.[]
