On the twins‘ sixth birthday, Mr. Moretti planned to throw them a celebration party.[]
Isabella had specifically taken two days off from work, and the family of four arrived at the estate a day early.[]
Just as the party was about to begin, the castle cake they’d ordered days ago still hadn’t arrived.[]
Lucius wanted to drive to the bakery to check on it, but Isabella refused to let him leave, preferring to have the staff make two simple cakes instead.

Lucius was about to try persuading her when he noticed her slightly trembling hands and the anxiety in her eyes. His heart softened, and he put down
the keys.

“Oh well, maybe next year we can ask Daddy to buy us a new one. By then we’ll be a year older, so the castle will definitely be prettier and bigger!”
Hearing this, something stirred in Ronan’s heart.[]

Both little girls saw him and threw themselves into his arms, calling him “Uncle Ronan” as they told him about the cake situation in their sweet, childish voices.
Ronan nodded and handed them their presents, ruffling their hair.]
“Well, you two be good and wait here at home. Uncle will go get your cake for you.“[]

“You don’t have to, Uncle Ronan. Mommy said we’ll just eat regular cake today. If she finds out, she’ll definitely be upset.“[]
“Yeah, Uncle Ronan, if you go now you’ll miss us blowing out the candles, and then there won’t be enough cake!“[]
Looking at their adorable, mischievous faces, for a split second Ronan almost saw two little Isabellas standing before him.

He could never forget the image of her as a child, following behind him and calling “Ronan! Ronan!” over and over.
But sadly, none of that could ever come back.[]
He closed his eyes briefly, hiding the emotions there, and forced out a smile.
“It’s okay. Just don’t tell Mommy, and Uncle will go get your cake. But you have to promise to secretly save Uncle a piece of birthday cake!”
After the three of them pinky–promised, Ronan left with the car keys.]
Just before walking out the door, something made him turn back for one last look. He saw Isabella leading the two children back to the living room.[
She still looked just like she had at twenty–time seemed to have left no trace on her.
