Chapter 5
Henry stared at Julian in shock.]
“What fiancée? Since when do you have a fiancée?”
Julian carefully helped me up, his eyes full of concern.[]
“Vivian, I’m so sorry… This is my fault. I should have protected you from this bastard.”
Then he turned to Henry, fury blazing in his eyes.[]
“Before you barged in here, Mother had already agreed–your engagement to Vivian is officially over.”
“Just now, she accepted my proposal.“]
Julian took my hand and raised it.[]
“She’s my fiancée now. That makes her your elder–deserving of your respect.“]
“Henry, this bracelet belongs to the Carter family. As the Carter heir, I gave it to Vivian. How dare you try to rip it off her wrist?“]
“You put your hands on your brother’s future wife? Have I been too lenient in teaching you basic respect?“]
“Today, I’m going to remind you what it means to be part of this family–know your place and respect my wife.“[]
Julian commanded the butler.[]
“Bring the discipline rod!“[]
Henry’s face went pale.
He shouted desperately, “Vivian, you were engaged to me! How could you accept my brother’s proposal?“]
“Even if we called off the engagement, didn’t I promise I’d still take care of you? Twenty years of love–you’re just throwing it all away?“]
I let out a cold laugh.
“Now you want to talk about love, Henry? Weren’t you just telling me I should give the bracelet to Sekar and break our engagement?”
“So why can’t I marry someone else? Is yours the only man in the Carter family?”
Henry frantically tried to explain.
“I said cancel the engagement, but I never said you could marry my brother!”
“I promised you–even without the legal wife status, I’d still take care of you. I still love you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Oh, so what you really mean is you want me to be your mistress.“[]
“You expect the Blake Corporation heiress to become your mistress and live on what–your $15,000 monthly allowance? You don’t even have a real job. What gives you the right to offer me that kind of life?”
“Forget the Blake family never accepting it–you’re not even qualified.“]
Julian’s patience snapped. He kicked Henry in the shoulder.
“You piece of trash. How dare you suggest making Vivian your mistress? How is someone like you even Carter blood?“[]
Just then, the butler arrived.
He carried a thin, polished oak cane–the Carter family’s rarely–used discipline rod.
Julian roared:
“Kneel!”
Henry looked defiant but still knelt under years of ingrained fear.[]
The rod struck his back. Blood quickly bloomed across his shirt.
Henry collapsed on the floor, groaning through gritted teeth.[]
His face twisted in pain, but he still tried to
“Julian… stay out of this. You don’t know what Vivian and I have been through. Twenty years of history–you don’t understand.“]]
Julian’s expression grew even darker.
He raised the rod again–more wounds spread across Henry’s back.
Sekar stepped back in terror, turning her face away.
“Henry, since you chose Sekar, take responsibility for your choice. Don’t waver back and forth.“]
“Carter men don’t abandon their principles: You know exactly what you did. And you still dare talk about ‘twenty years of love‘?“]
Tears filled Henry’s eyes.]
Looking at me with anguish written across his face: “Vivian… you can’t marry him. I know you still love me.”
“Don’t marry Julian just to get revenge on me. Don’t ruin your life out of spite. Trust me I’ll take responsibility for you.“]
