Chapter 4
My tears had nearly run dry.

I cried out over and over again: “I’m sorry, Mom, I was wrong.”
I shouldn’t have married Daniel. I shouldn’t have fallen in love with him.
But there was no turning back now. I could only watch helplessly as Elsie tearfully begged Daniel for mercy.
Daniel looked somewhat surprised, but quickly let out a cold laugh: “I can spare you. The condition is simple–as long as Harper comes out to donate bone marrow, I’ll let you go.”

Violet, who had been hiding behind the door watching, also sobbed: “Yes, Elsie. I just want Harper to donate bone marrow to me. Even though her child can’t be saved, mine can be born safely. I’ll let my child call her godmother.”
Before my child was born, I had looked forward to his arrival so much.
But I never expected that everyone would think this child could be casually abandoned.
Unfortunately, both my child and I had already left this world. At least that child wouldn’t have to witness these ugly things.

Frankie, lying on the ground, suddenly burst into laughter: “Daniel, Harper can’t find peace even in heaven because of you. Haven’t you always refused to believe she’s dead? I’ve been looking for evidence these past two days. Now check my phone –my colleague should have sent me Harper’s electronic death certificate.”
Daniel paused, looking at Frankie with suspicion.
Seeing how certain Frankie sounded, he sneered, then picked up Frankie’s phone, unlocked it, and glanced at the screen.
That one glance made all the coldness and disdain vanish from Daniel’s face, replaced instantly by shock and confusion.
His complexion quickly turned pale, his body trembling slightly, as if he’d seen something terrifying.
Finally, his hand shook, and the phone dropped to the ground, shattering into pieces.
Daniel’s voice was filled with disbelief: “Impossible! How can this be?”
On the phone screen, my death certificate stood out starkly.
Daniel’s eyes immediately reddened. Without caring about anything else, he grabbed Frankie by the throat: “This is fake, isn’t it? You’re lying to me, aren’t you?”

Frankie’s breathing was weak, but his face wore a mocking expression: “Death certificates can’t be forged. Face reality! Harper is dead. She died from complications during childbirth while trying to deliver your child.”
Daniel knew that forging a death certificate was absolutely impossible.
He just couldn’t accept that the person who had stayed by his side without complaint would never appear again.
Daniel suddenly thought of something: “Wait, the child. Where’s my child?”
He first stepped back a few paces, then suddenly looked up, staring intently at Frankie.
Frankie’s hand was still bleeding, but he hadn’t even thought about getting up to bandage the wound.

“That child is dead too. I buried his body with my own hands.” Frankie was crying and laughing at the same time, like he’d mad. “That child’s body was so small and cold. He probably never imagined his father would be such a cold–blooded, heartless man.”
I also remembered that child.
When I first got pregnant, Daniel had gently caressed my belly: “This child will definitely be very happy in the future.”

But later, this once–anticipated child became a “bastard,” became a bloody corpse.
Daniel staggered backward as if struck by lightning.
Seeing things going badly, Violet quickly grabbed Daniel’s
sleeve: “Daniel, I’m sad about Harper and her child’s death too. But don’t forget, I’m pregnant as well.”
Daniel froze.
Frankie shouted: “Daniel, this woman is a complete fraud. Everything she’s told you is a lie–whether it’s about supporting you after your parents died, or being sick and pregnant.”
He pointed accusingly at Violet, his eyes filled with rage.
Violet felt deeply wronged and tears fell: “Daniel, don’t you want to believe me?”
In the past, whenever Violet cried, Daniel would unconditionally take her side.
But this time, Daniel’s expression became dark and unreadable.
He said: “I’ll find out who’s lying with a little investigation.”
