(Aria’s POV)
“Did he confess to you?” Olivia asked again, her eyes wide with excitement.
“No! Of course not,” I denied quickly, feeling my wolf whimper softly within me at the very thought. “How is that even possible?”
Olivia leaned forward, her dinner completely forgotten. “Then how do you know he likes you?”
The memory of that moment in the car flashed through my mind–Dominic’s intense silver–gray eyes watching me while I pretended to sleep, his gentle fingers caressing my cheek. The warmth of his touch had sent electricity through me, awakening something I didn’t want to acknowledge.

“But his family seemed to accept you-”
“Besides,” I interrupted, “I just want to give birth to this pup and raise it. I don’t want to think about other things right now.”
Olivia sighed heavily, defeated by my logic. “Okay…”
She pushed her food around on her plate, her brows drawing together as her thoughts turned darker. Suddenly, she slammed her fork down.
“It’s all that scumbag Alexander’s fault!” she declared angrily.
I shook my head and smiled bitterly. “No one can be blamed for this situation.”
If I really had to blame someone, I could only blame myself for being blind and falling in love with Alexander in the first place.
The thought triggered a memory I hadn’t revisited in years. I was sixteen, attending pack training at the Neutral Grounds with other young wolves. I had unexpectedly entered my first moon cycle that day, and my scent was suddenly overwhelming- drawing unwanted attention from the young male wolves around me.
I had been at a complete loss, unsure how to handle the situation, when suddenly a pack jacket was thrown over my shoulders, blocking my exposed scent. I remember looking down at the collar, where “Alexander Reed” was neatly embroidered in silver thread.
That jacket saved me from harassment and preserved my sensitive young wolf’s dignity. After washing it carefully, I returned it to Alexander personally, thanking him for his kindness.

I nodded, my decision made. “First thing tomorrow, I’ll tell Dominic.”
True to my word, I began packing my belongings the next morning. I tried to catch Dominic to inform him of my decision, but his apartment was silent–he must have left early.
I headed to work at Silver Leaf Herbalists, still processing Claire’s dramatic visit from the previous day. Throughout my shift, I tried to focus on my moonberry–infused remedies, but my mind kept drifting to how I would explain my decision to Dominic. When I returned to Moon Valley Residences that evening, I approached his door, but again, no answer. His absence was unusual -he was typically home by this hour.
It wasn’t until much later, as I was preparing for bed, that I heard the distinctive ping of the elevator followed by shuffling footsteps in the corridor. Then came a heavy thud against my door, as if someone had fallen against it.

“Alpha Blackwood celebrated a successful security contract tonight and had a bit too much wolf–whiskey,” he explained, adjusting his grip as Dominic swayed slightly.
I expected Dominic to be barely conscious, but when he raised his head, his silver–gray eyes focused directly on me with surprising clarity.
“Aria,” he said, his voice deeper than usual but remarkably steady for someone who
supposedly had “a bit too much.”
Dominic straightened, removing his weight from Hunter’s shoulder. “That will be all, Hunter. Thank you.”
Hunter looked uncertain. “Sir, are you sure-”
Dominic dismissed him with a wave of his hand, his Alpha authority undiminished by intoxication. “I’m fine. Go home to your family.”
With a respectful nod to both Dominic and me, Hunter departed, though he glanced back once with concern before the elevator doors closed.
Dominic gestured toward his apartment across the hall. “Come in.”
It wasn’t a request, but it wasn’t quite an order either. Something in his tone made it impossible to refuse.
I followed him into his apartment, watching as he settled himself onto his couch with more grace than I expected from someone who’d been drinking heavily.
“You need water,” I said, heading toward his kitchen.
“Second cabinet on the right,” he called after me.

By the time I returned to the living room with the warm liquid in a mug, Dominic had fallen asleep on the couch. His powerful frame was sprawled across the furniture, one arm thrown over his eyes, the other dangling toward the floor. His chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm, his Alpha scent now mingled with the strong aroma of wolf–whiskey.
I hesitated, unsure if I should wake him. The remedy would be more effective if taken immediately, but he looked so peaceful.
“Dominic,” I called softly, placing the mug on the coffee table. “Wake up. You need to drink this.”

Slowly, deliberately, he reached up and removed my hand from his face. His fingers wrapped around my wrist, gentle yet firm. I couldn’t look away from his gaze, couldn’t move as he leaned forward once more.
Then his lips were on mine, capturing them in a kiss that tasted of wolf–whiskey and something uniquely Dominic.
