Chapter 17
Samuel shut his eyes, struggling to control his rage.
“Why didn’t anyone inform me?” he said through gritted teeth.
If someone had told him about it, he wouldn’t have let Catherine go to the courthouse and finalize the divorce.
“We did call you, but your phone was turned off…”
The officer’s voice trailed off, and Samuel instantly turned pale.
Staggering backward, he finally recalled what happened. He had tricked Catherine into signing the divorce agreement, and after he showed it to Natalie, she’d kissed him.
Now that the woman he’d pined after for so long had made a move at him, he jumped at the opportunity. After submitting the divorce agreement to the courthouse, he immediately took Natalie to Meldives.
He’d turned off his phone to spend all his time with her. But he never imagined that doing so would lead to such a grave mistake.
All of a sudden, Samuel slammed his fist into the wall. Blood burst out instantly, staining the white surface a deep red.
Just then, the staff member who had been sent to retrieve the divorce certificate came running back and handed it to his superior.
“Mr. Lynch, here’s your divorce certificate. Please keep it safe. If you ever want to remarry, you’ll need it.”
Samuel froze, his gaze landing on the certificate.
After a long pause, he slowly reached out to take it. But the moment he touched the document, it was as if he’d been burned. He jerked his hand back.
The paper fluttered in the air, and the sight before him stung. He swallowed hard. Moments later, a metallic tang rose in his throat.
The color of the stamp on the divorce certificate looked strange. It didn’t look as pleasant as the one on their marriage certificate–more like the dark bruising that seeped beneath the skin.
It was unsettling, and just looking at it alone made Samuel’s heart throb in pain.
His fists tightened and released in a slow, restless rhythm before he finally took the divorce certificate.
Samuel absentmindedly ran his fingers over the raised seal. The rough texture of the official government form scraped painfully against his skin.
He suddenly remembered the day they got their marriage certificate five years ago–how Catherine’s ring finger had a faint pink indentation from the ring.
Now, his own fingers curled in exactly the same way, pressing pale crescent marks into the edge of the paper.
Back then, they had leaned so close to each other in the photo, beaming at the camera. But now, only his solo photo was attached with the divorce certificate – he looked expressionless and utterly miserable.
Taking a deep breath, Samuel tucked the certificate away and headed home. He’d been divorced without even knowing, and he refused to accept this. He never
would.
He had to find Catherine and get her back.
In truth, he didn’t believe she’d really go through with divorcing him.
A black Maybach sped through the downpour, running several red lights. He managed to cut the 40–minute drive into half.
As soon as the car came to a halt, he stumbled out of the car and charged toward the villa.
It had once been their marital home, and it was Catherine’s only house in Caelora.
After all, the Jackman family had long since migrated to Unisia. But since her career was based in Caelora, Samuel had given the villa to her to make things easier
for her.
He strode up the steps and shoved the door open. But instead of a brightly lit room and his wife waiting for him on the couch, he was greeted with complete
darkness.
The light from outside illuminated the floating dust in the air.
Samuel froze, then stepped inside.
