Chapter 8

Just as the van was about to hit me, someone grabbed my arm and shoved me out of the way in the nick of time.
“Lucas!” I shouted.
But before I could react, the vehicle slammed straight into him and sent him flying across the pavement.
Doris panicked when she saw what had happened. She jumped out of the van and sprinted over, shouting, “Why did you have to stick your nose in? What am I supposed to do if you get hurt? What about me and the baby?”
Lucas lay there in pain, barely able to speak. “You are my sister–in- law…”
Tears ran down her face as she snapped, “Stop calling me that!”
“But, you’ve always treated me like I’m Andrew’s replacement. You kept getting involved in my life.
“Andrew’s gone. I was supposed to take care of you and the child, but not if it meant hurting Sharon…..
“I should’ve realized sooner… but I didn’t.”
I stood just a short distance away, and when he looked at me, I felt a wave of complicated emotions hit me.
Jimmy wrapped his arms around me and whispered gently, “It’s alright, the ambulance and the cops are on their way.”
A few minutes later, the ambulance arrived and rushed Lucas to the hospital. The two men who had been run over didn’t survive long enough to receive treatment.
Doris was escorted back to the police station, now facing charges of attempted murder.
Since Jimmy and I had witnessed everything, we went to the police station to give our statements.
も
With both of our testimonies and the coffee shop’s surveillance footage, it was clear she had deliberately caused the deaths.
Due to her pregnancy, she wasn’t sent straight to jail. Instead, she was kept in the hospital under constant police watch. Once she gave birth, she’d be charged with multiple crimes.
After leaving the station, I couldn’t stop feeling overwhelmed.
All I wanted was a clean breakup, not this mess.
Sensing my mood, Jimmy flagged down a taxi and said, “Go on. Just don’t forget to give me your summary when you come back.”
“Thanks, Jimmy! I’ll be back soon!”
I hopped into the taxi, determined to find closure for myself.
At the hospital, the doctor explained that if the two men hadn’t broken Lucas’s fall, he would’ve either died or ended up paralyzed at best. It wasn’t just a simple injury.
When I saw him lying there, wrapped in bandages, I didn’t know what to say.
He looked at me for a long time before finally asking, “Did you ever

love me?”
“I did,” I answered. “But that was in the past.”
“I’m sorry… I know I made mistakes, I just…”
I lifted my hand to stop him. “Doris has already been sentenced. Andrew’s child still needs you. Focus on getting better.

“There’s no point dragging this out. Let’s leave it as it is.”
That night, I returned home, quickly wrote the summary, and fell into bed, completely drained.
It had been a wild day.
“Sharon!”
“Yup!”

Jimmy walked in, and I instinctively sat up straight on the bed, trying to look serious.
“This summary’s sloppy. Your theory is fine, but your real–world judgment still needs improvement.
“Pack your things. You’re coming on a business trip tomorrow.”
“Got it!”
Three days later, I glided through the business gala, wine glass in hand, completely at ease.
All around me, businessmen whispered gossip.
“Did
you hear? Dalton Group just went bankrupt. I heard Lucas sold it off himself!”

“That business was already falling apart–he just jumped ship before it sank”
“He gave all his savings to some charity and said he wanted to start fresh. Did the crash scramble his brain?”
The room erupted in laughter.
I
gave a small wave to the waiter, who quickly brought me another
bottle of wine. After filling my glass, I made my way over to the event’s host with a friendly smile.
Tonight, my focus was on landing a deal. Everything else–especially the past–was behind me.
There was no reason to turn around, and I wasn’t going to.
The future is full of uncertainties, but that’s what makes it exciting.
Now, I finally have the opportunity to shine in the field I’m passionate about.

And I know–it’s only going to get better from here.
The end.
