Chapter 7
It felt like a sharp blade stabbing straight into Janet’s heart.
For the first time, she hated herself this intensely.
Watching her mother on the verge of madness from grief,
Janet forced herself to stay strong and wrapped her arms around her.
“Mom, it’s okay. Just four more days, and we can leave.”
All she wanted now was to spend these last few days peacefully with her
mother.
But someone was determined to shatter that peace.
The door rattled violently under pounding fists. Janet opened it to find several burly bodyguards, her face draining of color.
Clenching her teeth, she asked warily, “What do you want? Isn’t it enough that I’m leaving like they demanded?”
The lead bodyguard spoke bluntly, “Justin sent us to invite you to Miss Helen’s birthday party.”
“You were colleagues once, worked at the same law firm.”
“Miss Helen wants you there.”
Janet let out a cold laugh. “And if I refuse?”
The leader waved his hand instantly.

Bodyguards shoved past her, pinning her gray–haired mother down.
“Justin said if you won’t go, your mother will attend instead.”
Tears welled in Janet’s eyes at the sight.
Her voice strained, “Let my mother go! I’ll go, alright?!”
Though called an invitation, Janet was escorted like a prisoner to the
venue.

At the entrance,
she spotted Helen and Justin surrounded by admirers.
Helen no longer looked plain like years ago.
Her makeup was flawless, her gown lavish.
Guided by Justin, she moved with ease among the elite.
And Justin’s gaze, whenever it rested on her,
held unmistakable tenderness and adoration.
That look felt achingly familiar to Janet.
During the two years Justin loved her most, he’d watched her just like
that.
Unprepared, Janet stood out in her casual clothes.
The moment she entered, vicious whispers swirled around her.
Helen suddenly glided over, skirts swaying. “Please, everyone–no harsh words for Janet. We had our differences,”

“Besides,” she added with a smug smile, “Justin and she parted amicably. He loves me deeply now.”
Janet instinctively looked at Justin.
His silence at Helen’s “amicable parting” made tears well up again.
Janet tried to excuse herself after brief pleasantries.
But Helen leaned in, her voice a conspiratorial whisper:
“Leaving so soon, Janet? I saved a special surprise for you today.”
That eerie smile on Helen’s face
sent a chill down Janet’s spine.
Then it happened.
Moans, raw and obscene, echoed through the hall.
On the largest screen,
played footage of Janet’s sister in a compromising video with that man.
Janet’s blood ran cold; her limbs froze.
