Chapter 29 Playing Chess

Remembering the vow he had made to himself earlier, Thomas glanced at Jazlyn beside him and gave a nod. “If you want to do it, go ahead.”
Freya instantly felt a surge of determination.
The way to win a man’s heart is through his stomach–this rule applies universally, especially to older men
Freya had been preparing for this moment, honing her cooking skills specifically to cater to Thomas‘ preferences.
She was certain that the dishes she made
win him over without a doubt.
She cheerfully stood up and headed for the kitchen.
“Would you like me to lend a hand?” Jazlyn felt it wasn’t right to stand idle while someone else worked in the kitchen.
But Thomas quickly pulled Jazlyn aside.
“Help? Don’t be ridiculous! Come on, play chess with me. Without you, I won’t have anyone to challenge me,” Thomas said, tugging her along without giving her a chance to refuse.
Freya felt a surge of frustration as if she might choke on her own anger.
Why did it feel like she had come here to play the role of a nanny?
Kingsley let out a sigh and trailed after Freya into the kitchen.
“I’ll help you,” he offered.
Freya turned to him, her gaze clear and earnest.
“Kingsley … it seems like Grandpa is really fond of Ms. Xander.”
Kingsley couldn’t help but feel at a loss himself. “She’s spent so much time with him, so it’s only natural for Grandpa to like her. Don’t stress over it–just take things one step at a time.”
“Yeah, I know…” Freya replied, though jealousy burned within her.
What exactly does Jazlyn know? How could she win Thomas over like that?
It had to be because she constantly flattered him.
Thankfully, Kingsley was still on her side.
As Kingsley stood nearby, he watched Freya work on the meal. The dishes she prepared looked appealing and mouthwatering.
Freya felt quite pleased with herself. She lifted her head and asked, “What do you think of the dishes I made?” “Don’t worry, they’re great. Grandpa’s bound to enjoy them,” Kingsley assured her.
Hearing his encouragement boosted Freya’s confidence.
“Quick, go tell Grandpa to come eat,” she urged.
As Kingsley approached the study, he could already hear the sound of a chess game unfolding inside.
“How could you make that move? No, wait–I take it back!” came the voice from within.

“That’s because you didn’t follow the rules, which led to my mistake!” Thomas countered.
“It’s called all’s fair in war!”

“No, no,” Jazlyn protested adamantly.
Kingsley stepped into the room, glancing at the two who were still arguing over the chessboard with flushed faces. “Grandpa, the food is ready. Let’s eat first,” he said calmly.
“Eat? I haven’t won a single game today! I can’t eat until I win at least one round, Thomas declared stubbornly.
Kingsley raised an eyebrow. “You haven’t won a single game?”
He shot a suspicious glance at Jazlyn, then found himself walking closer to the board, intrigued.
Kingsley studied the chessboard, his gaze growing intense as he turned his attention to Jazlyn
Did she make this move?
Jazlyn, sensing his look, quickly blocked the board and said to Thomas, “Alright, alright, we’ll continue after we eat. Let’s go. have dinner first.”
“No…” Thomas protested.
“Let me put it plainly,” Jazlyn continued with a smile, “You have no chance of winning this game. Let’s eat first, and then we can start the next round.”
Thomas looked utterly put out, clearly disappointed.
At that moment, Freya entered, her presence interrupting the mood.
“Grandpa…” she said softly, her tone hesitant, “I made your favorite dish. Why don’t you try it before we continue with the chess game?”
