While my family was throwing a damn party over splitting my winning lottery ticket, I was flat broke, sleeping on the streets.[]
That night, some drunk lowlifes followed me home. I died a horrible death.]
They dumped my body like trash, while my family cheered and clinked glasses.]
When I woke up, I was back on the day of the lottery drawing.]]

The high–pitched voice belonged to my thirteen–year–old cousin, Liam:[]
I was standing on the sidewalk, clutching the lottery ticket so hard my knuckles went white, too stunned to speak.]]
I could still feel the weight of those animals pinning me down… their laughter… the icy water closing over my head… my body left to rot.[]
It was all still too fresh.]
“I told you,” Uncle Jake’s voice sliced through the air, sharp and real as ever.[]
“Girls like you don’t need college.“[]
“You get yourself married off early, that’s the real job!“]
“Now it’s late as hell and you’re still not home making dinner–do you even care about your family?“]]
Liam giggled, then mimicked him at the top of his lungs.[]
“Should’ve strangled you at birth, you worthless piece of crap!“[]
That’s when it hit me.[]
I’d come back.]
In my last life, this exact phone call had sent me running home, clutching the ticket, thinking it was finally my way out.[]
I’d opened it in front of everyone.[]
And sure enough, they all lit up like they’d just won the Super Bowl.[]
Uncle Jake’s eyes shone. []
“Sis, looks like I’m finally getting my new house!“]
Aunt Karen clasped her hands, grinning ear to ear.[]

“Liam, you remember this–your aunt just gave you a future.“[]
“You better treat her like gold.“[]
“Don’t turn into your cousin, who got married and forgot all about her parents.” []
She hugged Liam’s head tight.[]
“And who said you can’t go to that fancy prep school? Mama’s signing you up tomorrow!“[]
Mom was all smiles, practically glowing.]
Dad sat on the couch with his legs crossed, staring at the family photo on the table, saying nothing.
“Oh honey, oh honey!” Mom paced the living room, laughing.
“Amy, you’re my little treasure!“]]
Only, her eyes were locked on Liam.]
For years, Uncle Jake and Aunt Karen had been whispering in her ear–telling her my sister was useless, that once she married, she was nothing.
They’d forced my sister to marry some broke old farmer, and she’d spent her life trapped in misery.[]
And me?
I was told college was a waste of money. []
I should just find a man.[]
So I worked part–time through school, never asking my parents for a dime, terrified they’d pull the same stunt on me.[]
“Once we get that big house, Liam’s gonna study hard and take care of his aunt and uncle,” Uncle Jake said, slapping his thigh, flushed with excitement.]
Everyone was high on the moment.
I quietly tucked the ticket into my pocket.[]
“Mom,” I said softly, “I’d like to get my own place.“[]
“I’m starting my internship soon, can’t keep living in the dorms.“]
“Just a small apartment–five hundred square feet would be fine.“[]
The room went dead silent.[]
Even Dad stopped flipping his newspaper.]

Silence.
“… Five hundred thousand?” I tried again.]
“…Even fifty thousand would help. Rent’s not cheap–first, last, and security deposit-“]

The sting lit up my cheek and I stumbled back.]
“All that schooling and you’re still dumber than dirt!” Aunt Karen barked. []
“Your mama raised you for twenty years–her money is her money! And you dare try to steal from her?“[]
She pretended to wipe tears. []
“Sis, don’t be mad. I only slapped her ‘cause I’m so angry.“[]
I looked at my useless father, Uncle Jake smirking like the devil, and felt my heart turn to ice.]]
“Amy! Apologize to your Aunt Karen!” Mom snapped from above me, her eyes blazing.
