Marcus frowned, clearly not expecting me to defy him. He challenged, “Oh, you’ve grown a backbone now? What’s our relationship? Should I tell him I’ve slept with you or that you’ve been living like a beggar in our house for all these years?”
I stared at Marcus, my breath hot and my vision trembling with despair.
“Marcus, you’re going too far!” Nicholas stepped forward, grabbing Marcus by the collar.

“Madeline, have I been too kind to you lately?” Marcus advanced, grabbing my wrist and dragging me to the storage room in the backyard.

“Marcus, what did Maddy do wrong that you had to lock her in the storage room?” Bernice demanded angrily.
