I went home in a daze, crawled onto the sofa,
and cried myself to sleep.
I woke to the sound of the key in the lock. Ethan stood in the doorway, looking tired. He frowned at me. “Why are you sleeping on the
couch?”

I studied his face, suddenly seeing a stranger.
He had never kissed me with such passion,
never whispered sweet nothings. Our
relationship had always been driven by me. I’d
assumed it was his personality, but now I
knew he simply didn’t care.
He shifted uncomfortably under my gaze. “I
saw your text. What’s the deal? I’ve been busy
with work. I’ll make it up to you.”
Watching him continue the charade was
almost comical. His acting was terrible; I’d
just been too blinded by love to see it.
“Let’s get married,” I said, the words flat and
emotionless.
A flicker of annoyance crossed his face. “Ash, we talked about this. We’re focusing on our

careers. We’ll get married when things are
more stable.”
I knew he hadn’t broken up with me because
of my family. Ethan’s family business had nearly gone bankrupt. My father’s investment
saved them. Ethan’s startup also relied
heavily on my father’s connections. He
couldn’t afford to lose me.
“Then let’s break up,” I said, my voice
trembling slightly.
He tried to play it off, pulling me into a hug.
“Ash, we’re not kids anymore. Don’t be so
dramatic.”
His touch repulsed me. I pushed him away
and walked into my bedroom, closing the
door firmly behind me.
