Chapter 12
Scarlett had never imagined that people really did become ghosts after death.
When the injection entered her veins, she experienced exactly what she expected–a painless descent into eternal sleep.
But her consciousness disappeared for only a moment before rushing back like a tide.[]
She opened her eyes to find herself floating in midair, looking down at her lifeless body below.
The doctors couldn’t see her. After confirming her death, they issued the certificate and sent her body for cremation.[]
Watching her own body being cremated felt too bizarre, so she floated around aimlessly, never expecting to see Nathaniel in the hallway–much less to see him reading her diary.[]
She froze, wanting to close the diary, but remained motionless as she watched Nathaniel cry.[]
His eyes were red–rimmed, tears falling drop by drop onto the pages. He cried silently, yet somehow conveyed profound grief.[]
Scarlett’s heart felt as if it had been struck. She floated silently, watching him.]
Later, Riley arrived too. They argued, revealing the past Scarlett had never known.[]
After hearing everything, she felt a profound sadness. The question that had tormented her for a year was finally answered after her death.[]
Looking at Nathaniel, she wanted to say. If you chose Riley, stay with her properly.
Yet she also wanted to say: If you don’t love Riley, then leave. Don’t let guilt trap you for life.
But she could say nothing, only watch helplessly as Nathaniel left the facility and drove his car into the sea.
In her panic, she called out Nathaniel’s name. He seemed to hear her response, hazily opening his eyes.[]
In that moment, she almost believed Nathaniel could see her.[]
Just like now.
His direct gaze fell on her face Scarlett froze, about to ask if he could see her, when Nathaniel looked away, as if he had never seen her at all.]
Scarlett paused, feeling disappointed as she lowered her head.]
ne?“|
Riley pounded Nathaniel’s shoulder, sobbing: “You bastard! If you die, what happens to me?”
Nathaniel, pale–faced, lowered his head: “I’m sorry.“]
“What good is ‘sorry?” Riley’s wedding dress was soaked with tears at the front.]
“Was Scarlett so important? So important that her death makes you want to throw your life away?“[]
Nathaniel remained silent.]
Scarlett knew Nathaniel wouldn’t answer this question. He had always been good at hiding his emotions.[]
She sighed, but then heard Nathaniel say: “Yes.“]
Scarlett froze, looking at him.
Nathaniel’s gaze was steady: “I grew up in an orphanage with no family. Scarlett showed me what home meant. She was once my world. If this world doesn
have her, then for me, it has no meaning.”
Scarlett’s heart ached. Riley bit her lip: “What about me? What am I to you?“[]
“I’m sorry,” Nathaniel looked at her. “Before, I thought I could give you whatever compensation you wanted. But now I realize some things I can never give.“[]

Chapter 12
“You… you loved Scarlett that much.” Riley’s voice caught. “I knew it. I should have known.“]
“But she’s dead!” Riley gritted her teeth. “Dead people never come back!“]
After saying this, she stormed out.]
Nathaniel leaned back against the headboard, saying distantly: “Do dead people really never come back?”
Scarlett sighed. Though she knew Nathaniel couldn’t hear her, she still replied: “No, they don’t.”
Whether it was her imagination or not, after she said this, Nathaniel’s lips seemed to grow paler.
Scarlett watched him for a moment, then turned to check on Riley. But just as she reached the door, she heard
a noise
behind
She turned to see Nathaniel take a fruit knife from the bedside table and position it over his wrist.
