The bell echoed through the silent church, lingering long after it stopped.]
Nathaniel’s ears rang. He turned to Riley and asked, “Who was that person they announced?”
Riley covered her mouth in shock, looking at Nathaniel’s blank expression. She shook her head, tears welling in her eyes.]

As this memory surfaced, he felt as if his heart was being cut into a thousand pieces, the pain almost suffocating.[]
He pushed Riley’s hand away and rushed toward the exit.
Riley blocked his path, tears smudging her makeup. “Nate, remember what you promised my mother on her deathbed. Have you forgotten?“]
Nathaniel stared down at her blankly, as if he didn’t recognize her, his gaze looking through her to somewhere far away.
His face was deathly pale.

He pushed past her and hurried to his car, starting the engine.]]
Behind him came the sound of Riley’s sobbing, but he could no longer hear anything.
The car sped along, bouncing over the road. The world seemed hazy and surreal. Nathaniel felt as if he’d fallen into a thick white fog where he could neither see nor hear anything, only the thundering in his brain replaying fragments of recent memories.[]
In the hospital, she had said, “I’m just here for a checkup.”
Blood dripping onto the catalog, she had said, “Just inflammation from a cold.”

Nathaniel opened it mechanically. After just a glance, the grief he had been desperately suppressing flooded into his eyes like a broken dam.
