Chapter 15
He tilts my chin, forcing my tear–streaked face into his dark gaze.
“What should I do to so that you’ll like me?”
Before I can react, he crashes his lips onto mine–rough, bruising, nothing like the gentle kisses from earlier. []
The savage kiss drowns out my sadness. Floating in the moment, I peek up at him and think I get Chad now–sometimes a new flavor hits different.
I sleep till noon the next day.
Maybe the rest helps, because the texts don’t sting as much.
Shane’s at work, left me breakfast. I munch at the table, scrolling Facebook, when Chadwick’s mom calls. Now that’s a good old lady I love. []
My heart jumps as I answer, hearing her sobs. ||
“Mom…”
“Joan, if you want a divorce, I’m with you.” []
My nose burns, tears falling.
“Mom, I’m sorry-” |
“No, it’s me. I didn’t raise Chad right. I failed you…“[]
I wipe my eyes, choking on the lump in my throat. [
“Joan, don’t feel tied down. Even if you divorce, you’re still my daughter.” [
When I say I want a divorce, Chad refuses. [
He thinks my amnesia erased my love, that I’ll regret it when I remember. He wears my favorite white shirt, takes me to our go–to restaurants, walks our old park, revisits our schools, rehashing every memory. []
He’s lost in the past, obsessing over our “great love,” but I stay stone–faced. []
Finally, he asks quietly, “Still nothing?” |
Looking at him feels like looking through glass. It hasn’t been long, but I’m weirdly calm–accepting this failed marriage. I watch the blue sky, the college sweethearts holding hands, their pure smiles.
I used to smile like that. []
No, I don’t regret marrying him. Even if he turned ugly, I had his best years. I shouldn’t punish myself for his mistakes; it’s time for a fresh start. []
“Chad, actually–“[
“Joan, don’t divorce me.” He hugs me tight, begging, “I’ll be better, I swear! Even if you don’t remember, I’ll make you love me again. Don’t like anyone else, don’t leave me. I can’t live without you.”
“You said that before, but you cheated.” []
His body goes rigid, arms loosening.
I push him back, smiling softly at his panic.
“I wasn’t really amnesiac. I lied.”

His eyes go wide.
“What are you talking about?” [
“You lied to me first. Now we’re even.” [
His eyes redden, voice tight: “So you slept with Shane to get back at me?“[]
“Kinda.” I nod. “I heard you at Golden Apple Club, talking to Vance. You said ten years with one person gets boring, that younger girls are more fun. Said I couldn’t compare.” [
His anger deflates, replaced by pain.[
“I messed up. I hurt you.” []
“Yeah, you did.” [
“Can I have another chance?” He begs.
Ipause, shake my head.[]
“No.” Looking at his broken expression, I add, “Chadwick, I don’t love you anymore.” [
He drags his feet on the divorce, so I send the video. []
I tell him I’ll never forget, that being with him makes me sick.
Finally, he agrees. As the cheater, he offers me everything, but I settle for 60/40. He was good to me once, and without him and his mom, I might not be
here.
The day we sign, he asks for a goodbye dinner. []
I wave him off, saying, “Don’t ever look for me.” [
My mother hates the divorce so I don’t go home. I leave the house to Chadwick and buy a new place with my settlement. Moving in, I’m ready for a fresh start.
Shane stops by all the time. I tried keeping things casual, but hey–I’m no prude. Since I’m not marrying anytime soon, hooking up with him beats toys
or escorts.
He says he’s single, so we become friends with benefits.
Then surprise–twins.
So we level up from that to co–parents.
Guess this is life now.
