Chapter 8
Just thinking about how the whole divorce process might drag on forever already gave me a headache.
Yet I tried to stay calm and asked, “Did I hear that right? You want to get back together? Are you sure your mistress is okay with that? Isn’t she busy trying to become your wife?“}
“There’s no mistress anymore,” Wren said, putting on his most sincere tone. “I’m done with her. I only want you.”!
But his fake tenderness only made my skin crawl. I was speechless for a second, then scoffed, “Save the cheesy lines for someone who cares. If you don’t show up, just wait and see what happens.“>
After saying that, I hung up and immediately left the group chat.}
Soon after, Stan came in with a folder and handed it to me. “Miss, these are the shares we’ve been quietly buying from Wintringham Corporation. You now own the largest stake among all the shareholders. You have full decision–making power.“>
A smile tugged at my lips. All those late nights and back–to–back meetings had finally paid off.”
Wren had no idea that his beloved company was about to change hands.
Stan continued, his eyes filled with admiration, “We’ve also pulled in most of their key partners and clients. Congratulations, Miss, you’ve officially taken control of Wintringham Corporation!“}
I smiled faintly.”
Everything I’d endured over the years, every long day, every sacrifice, had led me to this moment. That fire–forged version of myself wasn’t going to be walked over ever again.
I’d tried the peaceful route, but it didn’t work.§
Now, they’d see what I was capable of.”
That same night, one of Wren’s childhood friends called me, clearly flustered.
“Denisse, Wren’s drunk. He keeps calling your name and won’t let anyone near him. Can you please come get him?“}
“Don’t call me by my name. And don’t ever bother me again. Call Ellery instead of me,” I replied and hung up right after.
Third Person’s POV
The friend looked helplessly at the drunken mess Wren had become.
Everyone else tried calling Denisse, too, but they all got the same response. It was because she had blocked them all.
“Dude… she blocked every one of us,” one of them said.
Suddenly, Wren slammed a bottle onto the floor, glass shattering everywhere.”
“Who the hell told you to call her? You think I can’t live without Denisse?!” he fumed.
With that scenario, everyone was left speechless, making the room eerily quiet.
Eventually, one friend stepped forward and clapped a hand on his shoulder. “Man, lie to us all you want. But don’t lie to yourself. If you wait too long, it’ll really be too late.“}
Another chimed in, “Yeah, bro. We mess around, sure. But you let someone walk all over your wife? That’s not okay.“}
“And that Ellery? She’s too much. She posts your whole relationship online and pretends she’s doing it for female empowerment. It’s just shameless.“}
Then they showed him one of her latest posts. She’d plastered their relationship all over social media, pretending it was some noble act of support, when in reality, she’d just exposed how she schemed and seduced under the guise of helping women.§
Seeing that, Wren’s face turned red with rage. “This damn woman!“}
Now, he finally saw how he’d mistaken her fake sweetness for Denisse’s carefree innocence.
Swiftly, he grabbed his coat and stormed out. “I’m going to deal with her myself!“}
Denisse’s POV
Three days later, it was finally the day we were scheduled to finalize the divorce.
I waited at the county clerk’s office for what felt like forever before Wren finally showed up, dragging his feet like a defeated man.§ “Hurry up,” I said flatly, “The staff’s about to go home.”
Ever since the Wintringham Corp. crisis broke out, he’d been running around like a headless chicken. He looked like he’d aged a decade overnight.B
Finally, he realized how important I was, that his company would collapse without me. But not only that, his top employees also chose loyalty to me over him.”
Above all, most of his core clients had been poached by my company.}
Now, what remained of Wintringham Corp. was just a hollow shell, and changing its name would only take a single word from me. When his eyes met mine, I saw something flicker in them.
He took a hesitant step forward and softly said, “Denisse… I was wrong. I can’t live without you. Let’s not get divorced, okay?“}
