Chapter 4
Connor placed his hands on Maya’s shoulders. “Maya, what happened to our daughter is just as painful for me as it is for you. But we have to face reality. Don’t be sad anymore. We can have more children in the future.”
Maya looked at Connor coldly, with no interest in discussing the future. There would be no future between them anymore!]
Cormor suggested they go together to the Mitchell family cemetery. For the sake of letting her daughter rest in peace as soon as possible, Maya got into Connor’s car.
Halfway there, Connor received a call from his mother. She said the child was too young, and putting her in the Mitchell family cemetery would bring bad luck…
Connor said his mother was being too superstitious and hung up the phone]
Half a minute later, Serena called, saying Emma suddenly had a fever. Connor panicked and quickly had the driver turn the car around. He then looked at Maya beside him and said hesitantly, “Maya, can we let our daughter stay at the public cemetery for a while? Once Emma recovers and gets discharged, we’ll bring her back.“[]
“Sure.” Maya nodded in agreement.[]
Connor was surprised. All the explanations he’d prepared were stuck in his throat with no chance to come out.]
He’d expected Maya to make a scene–the way she did two months ago when their daughter first got in the accident and Maya had just found out about Emma’s existence. She’d caused such a huge uproar that everyone knew about it.[]
Now, her quietness made Connor uneasy.
“Maya…” Connor was about to say something when his phone rang again. It was another call from Serena, but this time it was Emma’s voice on the line.]
Connor couldn’t be bothered to ask Maya anything else and softened his voice to comfort the child.[]
Maya lowered her head, gently stroking the small urn in her arms.
A tear fell onto it. [
[Baby, be good. We’re not going into the Mitchell family cemetery–they don’t deserve you. Wait a little longer, and mommy will take you to find a more beautiful place.]]]
After taking care of everything, Connor rushed back to the hospital while Maya returned home.
The house was filled with her daughter’s things.[]
The rocking horse in the corner was handmade by Connor. The paintings on the wall were done by Connor and their daughter together.]
When Maya got angry about her daughter’s messy scribbles, Connor went out that same day and bought a whole box of watercolors to paint with her.]
He’d said adoringly back then that they couldn’t suppress his precious daughter’s natural talents–their daughter was going to be a great artist someday.
Walking into the bedroom, directly across from the bed was her and Connor’s wedding photo.]
Connor had said he wanted to look at it every day because it made every day happy for him. Their happiness hadn’t come easily, and he would protect it with his life.[]
Maya stared at it quietly for a few seconds, then moved a chair over and took down the wedding photo. The frame cut her hand and blood dripped all over the floor, but she didn’t even notice.[]
Next, she burned the frame, burned all of her daughter’s clothes and toys, and had someone come repaint all the walls.]
She didn’t want to leave Connor with anything that belonged to her and their daughter.[]

For a whole week, Connor didn’t come home once, which made Maya’s tasks even easier. []
The household staff just figured Maya was overwhelmed with grief and didn’t dare say anything.
A week later in the afternoon, Connor came home carrying his daughter Emma in his arms.[]
“Emma just got out of the hospital and can’t be away from me. The staff here are all hand picked by you and they’re really good with kids, so I brought her back.
Don’t worry, it’s just temporary. Once Emma’s recovered enough, I’ll have Serena take her back.“[]

“Maya, I’m bringing Emma here only because I’m her father. It doesn’t mean I love Serena. You’re the only one I love. If you don’t want her here, I won’t let Emma move in.“]]
Maya opened the door. “Come in.“[]
Connor looked incredulous. “Maya, you… you’re okay with this?“[]
“Yeah, I’m okay with it.” Maya smiled faintly. She was leaving anyway, and this house wasn’t her home anymore. What did it matter to her who else moved in?
Maya turned and went back to the bedroom. Connor handed Emma to a nearby staff member and hurried after Maya. As soon as he entered the room, he noticed the missing wedding photo. Panicked, Connor rushed forward and hugged Maya tightly.
“Maya, don’t be mad. Don’t ignore me.”

Four years ago, when Serena first got pregnant, Maya had acted the same way–cold and distant.[]
Connor was terrified. He used all his strength to hold Maya tight. “Maya, you can be as angry as you want, but don’t talk about breaking up. You’ll belong to me for the rest of your life.”
He’d said the same words back then.[]
She thought that was the last time. Now she realized how naive she’d been.[]
“Maya, I’m not with Serena. The only connection between us is Emma. You’re the only one in my heart.” Connor reaffirmed his love once again. As if to prove his point, he cupped Maya’s face and was about to kiss her.[]
“Daddy, I want Daddy!“]]
The little girl’s crying suddenly echoed throughout the entire house.
Connor paused mid–motion. He let go of Maya and rushed out of the room. “Emma’s crying. I need to go comfort her.”
Maya wiped her face where Connor had touched her, grabbed some clothes, and went into the bathroom, reminding herself that there were just over two weeks left–she could endure it a little longer.[]
That night, Emma cried all night because she missed her mother. Connor had no choice but to bring Serena over too.[]
Emma rushed into Serena’s arms, then grabbed Connor’s hand and pointed at Maya, who had just walked out of the room. She cried and threw a tantrum. “Why can’t Daddy and Mommy live together? You’re a bad woman! You’re a homewrecker! Get out!”]
Connor’s expression immediately darkened. “Emma, what are you saying? Who taught you to talk like that? You can’t say things like that!“[]
Emma froze, then cried even louder, her face streaked with tears.[]
“Serena, did you teach Emma to say that?” Connor’s face was stern, his tone warning, “I’ve told you before–Maya is my wife. Even with Emma here, we’re just friends. I don’t want to hear Emma talking about Daddy and Mommy living together anymore.“[]
Hearing Connor’s words, Serena cried pitifully as she picked up Emma, tearfully defending herself. “Connor, you’re misunderstanding me. I never said anything like that to Emma.
She’s four years old now, she already goes to preschool and understands things. When she sees other kids‘ parents living together, she gets these ideas. []
I’ve explained our situation is different, but she’s so young to understand…”
Listening to Serena’s words, Connor felt a pang of guilt and seeing Emma’s tear–streaked face made his heart ache even more, His tone softened considerably: “Alright, I shouldn’t have been so harsh just now. Take Emma back to the room.“[]
“Okay.” Serena nodded obediently, comforting the little girl in her arms as they headed back to the room.[]
