Chapter 6
Connor walked over to Maya and gripped her hands tightly, speaking with determination. “Maya, you’re my wife, the lady of this house. Once Emma’s condition stabilizes, they’ll move out. You just need to wait a little longer.“[]
Maya looked down at the hands holding hers tightly and nodded gently. “Okay.“]
She really did only need to wait a little longer, but not for Serena and her daughter to leave–she was waiting for the day she would “die” and disappear.
“My Maya is so good. I’ll make it up to you.” Connor pulled Maya into his arms and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.
He knew Maya loved him. Even though he was the one who pursued her first, Maya had already fallen deeply in love with him. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have forgiven him back then, and she would forgive him this time too.[]
Once Emma recovered, he and Maya would have another child. Then they could truly start fresh.
In the middle of the night, Maya woke up from a nightmare, dried tears in her eyes. She wiped away the tears and turned to find the space beside her empty.
Maya walked barefoot across the floor, opened the bedroom door, and heard Connor and Serena’s laughter coming from the room across the hall…]
The floor was cold in the dead of night, making her whole body shiver.
Maya closed the door. Even though she’d prepared to leave, even though she said she didn’t care, in that moment she couldn’t help but cry, couldn’t help but hold herself tight.[]
“Maya, don’t push me away. I need to hold you while I sleep–I can’t sleep without you.“[]
“Maya, you’re the only one in my heart and eyes.“[]

Every promise Connor had made in the past became a blade piercing her heart, so painful she couldn’t even cry out.
Maya didn’t want to face Serena and Emma. The next day, shortly after Connor left for work, she went out too.
She was planning where to go after she left. She wanted to find a place with beautiful mountains and clear water for herself and her daughter.
Maya spent the whole day out and didn’t come home until dinnertime. As soon as she pushed open the door, she saw Connor’s parents were there too.[]
In the living room, Serena was crying while holding Emma. Connor stood nearby with a livid expression. The moment Connor’s mother saw Maya return, she rushed over and raised her hand to slap Maya. The sharp sound of the slap echoed through the living room along with her cursing.[]
“You venomous woman! How dare you do such a thing!”
Maya fell to the floor from the unexpected slap, her right cheek burning with pain, and she could taste blood on her tongue.[]
Before she could say anything, Serena had already started crying. “Maya, I know you hate me, but how could you hurt my child? My daughter is only four years old, and she just had heart transplant surgery. No matter what, she’s innocent!“]
Maya wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth and looked at Serena. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.“[]
“You still won’t admit it!” Connor’s mother walked over to Serena and grabbed Emma’s arm, rolling up her sleeve. Emma’s arm was covered in bruises.[]
“It hurts, nana, it hurts.” Emma started crying loudly because of the woman’s actions.]
Connor’s mother let go of her hand in distress and glared viciously at Maya. “How could you bring yourself to hurt a child! You were a mother yourself!“]]
“I didn’t.” Maya denied it. “I never touched her.“[]
