Chapter 12
Connor’s phone trashed in the floor. He rushed to Maya’s side like a man possessed, pulling her into his arms. Warm blood covered his palms as he held her with shaking hands, his voice breaking. “Maya, Maya, open your eyes and look at me. Maya, don’t mess with me like this. Please don’t scare me, okay?”
After the initial shock, the banquet guests finally started picking tip the scattered papers.]
The first thing that caught their eyes was Connor’s signature on documents abandoning treatment for his own daughter, and below that was the heart transplant surgery for Serena’s daughter Emma on the same day, also signed by Connor.]
“Wait, Serena’s daughter is Connor’s bastard kid?”
“Jesus Christ, this kid is actually a year older than Maya’s daughter.”
“I thought Connor actually loved Maya, but turns out he was cheating the whole time.”
“This is sick–he took Maya’s daughter’s heart and gave it to his side chick’s kid. If that were me, I’d jump off a building too.”
The guests murmured among themselves, and when they looked at Connor again, their eyes were filled with judgment and disgust. Seeing the smile that Serena hadn’t had time to wipe off her face made them feel even more revolted.[]
“Call an ambulance! Someone call an ambulance!“]]
Connor held Maya and screamed at the crowd, but no one pulled out their phone to call for help.[]
They all looked at him with disgust and suspicion.[]
“What are you all staring at? Save her! Someone save her!“[]
Connor could clearly feel the person in his arms growing colder by the second. Panic was about to consume him completely. He picked up Maya and ran toward the exit of the banquet hall.[]
“Connor…” Serena tried to grab Connor, but he shoved her aside, sending her tumbling to the ground.[]
Maya was eventually taken to the hospital and rushed into the operating room
Connor waited outside the OR, his nerves completely shot, the image of Maya’s fall replaying endlessly in his mind. The smell of blood on his clothes was a constant reminder of what had just happened.[]
Everything that had just occurred left him numb, his heart feeling like it had a gaping hole.[]
Maya’s surgery wasn’t finished yet when his parents arrived at the hospital with Serena and Emma
“I think Maya did this on purpose! She had to pull this bullshit on such an important day. If she wanted to kill herself, she could’ve done it somewhere else.”
“Bad enough that she jumped, but she had to throw those papers around too. Do you have any idea what people are saying about the Mitchell family online? What they’re saying about you?”
“Everyone’s calling you a monster, saying you murdered your own daughter. They’re saying you’ve been playing the devoted husband when you’re really just a total scumbag!”
Connor’s father chimed in, “She better be seriously fucked up! If she’s fine after dragging our family’s reputation through the mud, I won’t let her off easy!”
Connor’s head snapped up. All he saw on his parents‘ faces was cold indifference.[]
His whole body felt like it had been hit by a bullet. He suddenly realized that even though he and Maya had been married for four years, even though they’d had a child together, his parents and his family had never accepted Maya.[]

The only person Maya could rely on was him.
And for the past two months, even he had betrayed Maya. She truly had nothing left.
Realizing this, Connor felt like his entire body was being devoured from the inside. He clenched his fists, restraining his suppressed rage, and kicked all four of them out of the hospital.]
He needed to stay with Maya. He didn’t want Maya to have to face his parents when she woke up.
