Chapter 1
Two months ago, Maya’s daughter was in a car accident and fell into a coma, never waking up again. [
Maya had been keeping vigil by the hospital bed day and night for two months, taking care of her.]
She had only left for half a day, and when she returned, her daughter was no longer in the room.]
The doctor said that Connor had not only agreed to discontinue treatment but had also signed the organ donation agreement.[]
Maya immediately ran out of the room like a madwoman, rushing toward the operating room.]
Outside the OR stood Connor and Serena.]
Connor stepped forward and grabbed Maya, holding her back to prevent her from getting near the operating room.
His face showed pain as he tried to comfort Maya. “Maya, let her go peacefully.“[]
“She’s not dead!” Maya’s eyes were bloodshot with rage as she glared at Connor. “The doctor said she still has a chance to wake up!“]]
“Maya, it’s already been two months. She lost too much blood–she’s not gonna wake up. []
Instead of letting her just lie there unconscious like this, we should use her heart to save her sister. Emma’s heart transplant surgery can’t be delayed
any longer.“]]
Hearing Connor’s words, Maya’s entire body began trembling uncontrollably.
Her heart felt like it was being ripped apart, and when she spoke again, even her throat ached with pain. “That’s what this is really about, isn’t it? Taking my daughter’s heart for HER daughter!” Maya pointed at Serena, who was standing behind Connor, tears streaming down her face.
“Connor…” Serena lowered her head with a wounded expression, calling his name pitifully as she naturally moved behind him, seeking his protection.]
Connor let out a helpless sigh, as if he was somewhat disappointed by Maya’s words. “Maya, how can you even think that? They’re both my daughters. I love them equally.“]]
Love them equally?
How could he even say something like that?
Just two months ago, he was telling her that their daughter was his one and only little princess. []
He said he’d give his life for the two of them–for Maya and their daughter. []
And now, he was personally giving up on their daughter’s life.
“Why can’t she get an artificial heart? Why does it have to be my daughter’s heart?” Maya clutched Connor’s shirt desperately, her teeth clenched as she demanded an answer.
A flicker of reluctance crossed Connor’s eyes, “Artificial hearts have a limited lifespan. I can’t bear the thought of Emma having to go through surgery again later.”
Maya’s tears came flooding out. The pain was so overwhelming she couldn’t get another word out.
She let go of Connor and stumbled backward several steps, her heart filled with devastating sorrow. She couldn’t understand how they’d ended up at this point.
Four years ago, when she first met Connor, it was love at first sight for him. From that moment on, Connor Mitchell–the golden boy of New York’s elite–became Maya’s devoted follower, Wherever Maya appeared, Connor’s shadow was sure to follow.
Everyone in the city knew that Connor had knelt for seven days and seven nights to refuse his family’s arranged marriage, all for Maya–an orphan girl with nothing to her name.
Chapter
This act finally made the Mitchell family back off. Connor, barely clinging to life, dragged himself through the bitter winter night to knock on Maya’s door. Before losing consciousness, he managed a smile. “Maya, now I can love you without any reservations.”
Maya melted under Connor’s passionate, fiery love. She pushed down her own insecurities and fears and accepted him.[]
One month before their wedding, Serena came to find Maya and she said she was pregnant with Connor’s child.]
Connor admitted that out of guilt toward his former arranged fiancée Serena, he had accepted her invitation and made a terrible mistake while drunk.]
