Chapter 10
He’d just gotten off the operating table, still dazed and confused, but he shot back on instinct, “Clay, what are you talking about? I didn’t say anything to her. I barely even know her! When did she get engaged? Man, stop playing with me.”
Even so, Clay didn’t believe him.
“Zane, you’re always defending Maya. I know! Her breakup and engagement were all planned by you, right? You just wanted to see me regret it!”
“I told you, I only love Riley. I already promised to marry her, the proposal’s done, all that’s left is the paperwork. What more does she want from me?”
“I know! Is she in a rush to get married? She blocked me everywhere. Tell Maya I’ll marry her now, so she’ll stop this nonsense!”
Clay rubbed his temples, barely suppressing his anger.
Zane almost laughed.
“Clay, I have nothing to do with her. I used to stand up for Maya just because I couldn’t stand seeing you treat her like that. Now she’s finally wised up and dumped you. I can’t help you with your mess, and don’t come looking for me again. You brought this on yourself!”
As soon as he finished, the call ended with two beeps. Zane hung up, fuming.
Clay stared at his phone, his expression complex.
Riley saw the panic in his eyes, her own face darkening for a second before she forced a smile.
“Clay, you said Maya loves you so much. She’s probably just upset and acting out. Give her some space, let her cool off. No need to stress.”
“She was with you for years, never leaving. She wouldn’t leave over this. And you had your reasons. for taking her bone marrow and ending her pregnancy. Just explain, she’ll understand.”
“Maybe she’ll come around and reach out in a few days. After all, you’ve been together for so long, you can’t just let go overnight.”
She offered casual reassurance. Whether the breakup was real or fake didn’t matter to her. These words were just to comfort Clay.
After all, she needed a healthy baby.
Clay’s bad mood could affect her pregnancy.
Riley slowly caressed her belly, her eyes filled with anticipation for the baby’s arrival.
If it weren’t for her grandfather’s failing health and the impending division of the family fortune, she wouldn’t be rushing to have a kid and mess up her figure.
llegitimate sons.
The extended family was eyeing the inheritance too, and she wasn’t about to let all that money
lip away.
Clay remained silent, his gaze lowered.
He seemed to have heard Riley, but also as if he hadn’t heard anything at all.
t wasn’t until Riley called his name a few times and kissed him that he finally snapped out of it.
Riley was right. I’d never leave him; a little tantrum was normal.
was easy to win over anyway. Once he explained his reasons, I’d understand.
Clay pushed down his anxiety and kissed Riley back. The two of them got tangled up again, nseparable.
For three days, Clay took Riley out everywhere, having fun, spending wild nights together.
But after three days, not a single message from me showed up on his phone. In fact, I hadn’t even unblocked him.
