Chapter 11
The anxiety in Clay’s chest was getting harder to ignore, even when he was walking right next to Riley.
After a long silence, he suddenly looked at her, guilt written all over his face.
“Riley, I can’t be with you right now. Work’s ‘s piling up, and I’ve been away for days. I really need to get back and handle things.”
“Alright, just don’t overwork yourself, okay? Remember to rest.” Riley replied, barely paying
attention.
But Clay didn’t notice, or perhaps he was used to it.
Riley was always like this–she’d only act sweet when she needed something from him.
If she didn’t, she’d just brush him off like I was yesterday’s news.
He used to hate that about her, but he just couldn’t let her go. He could only accept it.
Clay took Riley home, then returned to the villa.
The moment he walked in, he frowned.
The place felt empty, like something was missing, but at the same time, nothing had changed. “Where’s Maya? Hasn’t she come back? How long is she planning to keep this up?”
Clay’s voice was cold.
The butler and the maids exchanged uneasy glances, sighing deeply before one of them finally spoke up.
“Sir, Ms. Moore…she packed up and left three days ago. She didn’t leave a single thing behind. You didn’t ask, we assumed you knew.”
“And…Ms. Moore seems to have married Mr. Hawthorne. The internet‘ s blowing up about it. Did you really break up? Or is it just a fight? Should we tell the PR team to do something, take down these articles?” He showed Clay the pictures from the news.
The moment he saw them, Clay felt as if he’d been struck by lightning.
His ears were ringing; he couldn’t hear anything.
After a long moment, he found his voice.
“Maya’s really gone? Really married? She really doesn’t want me?”
“Isn’t this some sick joke? How could she marry Ethan? She knows he’s my rival; why would she do this to me?”
He couldn’t believe it, staring at the wedding photos again and again, unable to accept it.

He’d done
up to me.
wrong
and hurt me, he knew that. He’d planned to spend the rest of his life making it
So why would I marry Ethan?
Bang!
Clay threw the butler’s phone across the room.
It shattered into pieces. His eyes were bloodshot, almost losing control.
I’d really left.
There was barely a trace of me left in the villa.
Clay’s chest heaved with anger–I could hardly breathe.
Ethan had been his rival for years. What kind of person could he be? Did I even know him? I just up and married him like it was nothing. Wasn’t I afraid he’d hurt me, use me, or even worse?
The more he thought about it, the more worried he became.
After a while, he dialed a long–dormant number.
“Ethan, this is Clay Sterling. Maya is just angry; she only married you on a whim. Don’t hurt her.” “You better not lay a finger on her. She’s not some pawn for you to use against me. I suggest you send her back to me, or I swear, you’ll regret it.”
Clay’s eyes narrowed, his fingers tapping the table impatiently.
Ethan sneered from the other end.“Clay, Maya is my legal wife now. We’ve done…everything. You want me to send her back? Keep dreaming.”
He emphasized “legal wife,” his voice tinged with satisfaction.
Clay was no novice; he understood the implication. He clenched his fists, wishing he could punch Ethan through the phone.
