Chapter 23
Clay kept his eyes closed, acting like he didn’t hear a damn thing.
But his tightly pressed lips betrayed him.
After a long moment, he finally opened his eyes, his tone resolute.
“I won’t give up. Maya loved me for so long. If I persist, she’ll see my sincerity, and she’ll come back.”
Seeing his stubbornness, Zane didn’t try to persuade him.
He knew it wouldn’t work anyway.
He pulled up Riley’s surgery records and said, “Maya’s bone marrow has been removed and is stored at the hospital. The Ford family abandoned her; she’ll struggle to survive without dialysis.”
Clay nodded. “Thank you.”
Then, without another word, he yanked out his IV, grabbed my bone marrow, packed up a few things, and rushed off to Aspen..
In Aspen, every outdoor screen was blasting Clay’s apology video.
“Maya, I love apology.”
you.
Too bad I realized it too late. I hurt you many times, but I owe you this
“I’m sorry.
I love you.”
“I’ve revisited every place we went, recreated everything you did for me.”
“See? I added to your desk inscription. I replaced our lock on Lover’s Bridge. You wished for me; now I’ve covered a tree with wishes for you.
“I brought back your bone marrow. I won’t let it be wasted. If you hate me for ending our child, just hit me, scold me, torture me–I’ll atone. Please, come back to me, Maya.”
In the video, this handsome guy drops to one knee, holding up a diamond ring in one hand and a box with bone marrow in the other.
Watching this, I felt no emotion, only amusement and disgust.
He hadn’t loved me for years; only after seeing Riley’s true nature did he realize his feelings.
His love was cheap, fickle.
Ethan’s disgust was evident.
“Maya, your bone marrow shouldn’t be with him. It’s an insult to you.”
“I
agree. We need to see him.”
I frowned irritably.

than protected me so well, Clay couldn’t even get close. This was his only way to force a meeting. He knew it was wrong; he’d apologize.
uddenly, the door opened, and Ethan and I walked in, our faces icy.
I’m sorry…” Clay began, but I interrupted.
I’m not here to hear your apology. The damage is done; no apology can undo the hurt. I’m just
ere to take back my bone marrow. I won’t forgive you.”
ly voice was flat and emotionless.

The light in Clay’s eyes dimmed. He smiled bitterly.“Maya, besides the marrow, don’t you want to ee me? I hurt you; you won’t accept my apology, so hurt me back, okay?”
Here’s a knife. Stab me! If I die by your hand, I’ll be happy. It’s better than living like a zombie. I an’t live without you, 1-”
He stepped closer, pressed the knife into my hand, blood dripping down his arms, staining the loor.
