Chapter 8
The plane took off and landed, and as I stepped out of the airport with my luggage, I felt like I was dreaming.
Suddenly, a strong arm seized my hand, taking my luggage.
“You look spaced out–don’t tell me you’re still thinking about Clay.”
Ethan’s handsome face held a hint of dangerous intent, like if I said yes, he’d snatch me up right then and there, cut off any chance of returning to Clay, and keep me trapped by his side.
I was a little surprised by his intensity, but I shook my head.
“No, I’ve completely let go of him. I promised I wouldn’t like Clay again, and I won’t have anything to do with him.”
Hearing that, Ethan’s face broke into a grin.
“I hope you mean it!”
He tried to act all high and mighty, but his hand found mine anyway, and he led me and my suitcase toward his fleet of cars.
A fleet of black Maybachs stood in perfect formation, each trunk open, overflowing with roses and balloons.
With everyone watching, Ethan produced a pair of dazzling rings, kneeling before me..
“I know this is fast, but I don’t want to wait any longer. I want to marry you now–I don’t want to miss my shot!”
“I love you, Maya. Will you marry me?”
Though marrying Ethan was my plan all along, the surprise overwhelmed me..
All these years, while I was loving someone else, Ethan had been silently, steadfastly loving me. He’d just never let me know.
I wiped away tears, and with everyone shouting, “Say yes!“, I reached out my hand and nodded.
“Yes.”

Ethan’s hand trembled as he slipped the ring onto my finger. Before I could even process what was happening, he grabbed my hand and hustled me into the car.
“Did you bring your ID? Let’s go get our marriage license right now–no time for second thoughts!”
He whipped out all kinds of documents. He’d been waiting for this day forever and just wanted to lock it down.
His excitement was contagious–my heart was pounding out of my chest.

“I have all my documents. Let’s go to the civil affairs bureau.”

Before I finished, Ethan hit the gas, speeding towards the courthouse. Everything felt accelerated, impossibly fast.
“Say cheese!”
Click! The wedding photo was done, the official seal stamped, and our marriage certificates were fresh off the press, still smelling like ink.
Holding the two freshly printed certificates, Ethan and I were stunned.
Was this real? We were actually married?
Something I thought would never happen had become reality.
Ethan was so hyped he could barely speak, hugging me like he wanted to fuse us together. As if only this way could he confirm I was really there.
I let him hold me, feeling this crazy sense of relief. From now on, Clay and I were history.
But what I didn’t know was that Ethan’s big, flashy airport proposal had gone viral online.
It even reached Riley.
At the hotel, Clay had just finished showering when he saw Riley, hesitant, holding her phone.
